Background

 

In the frame of the project Education for Peacebuilding (Consolidation phase), Euromed Feminist Initiative, is looking for a Gender Expert.

To support an inclusive and Syrian-led political process by contributing to reform the Syrian primary and secondary school curricula and education system based on human rights, civil rights and gender equality as a mean to promote social cohesion and sustainable peace in Syria. The expected outputs of the project are the following:

 

  • Civil society actors of six targeted districts in Syria are mobilized to provide recommendations improving the educational environment with regards to discrimination fuelling the Syrian conflict.
  • A dialogue is engaged with political stakeholders to address social, cultural, religious and gender-based discrimination existing in Syrian textbooks and curricula.

 

Description of the assignment

 

The gender expert will:

 

  • Guide the research team in identifying and forming three stakeholders and right-holders’ groups in each of the targeted areas of the project including women’s rights and feminist organisations and experts.
  • Work closely with the CSO Expert in the mapping process, focusing on the gender sensitive dimension of the research.
  • Provide technical insights in the design of six workshops with facilitators, experts, and researchers as well as in the creation of the methodology that will be shared with all the parties involved.
  • Be responsible for the design and methodology of the series of recommendations that will be finalised at the end of the Consolidation Phase.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the project team in the identification of relevant stakeholders in the agreed region; collaborate with the project team in the design of workshops.
  • Coordinate with the project team on the development of an advocacy strategy for lobby trips and meeting with relevant stakeholders.

 

 

 

Deliverables:

 

The gender expert is expected to provide the following deliverables:

 

  • Review of the existing resources and collection of data with a gender sensitive perspective.
  • Methodology for the final recommendations.
  • Assuring that all conducted activities of the project are developed with a gender sensitive perspective.

 

Timeline:

 

  • The assignment is scheduled until the 31st of August 2024.

 

Qualifications, Background and Experience:

 

  • Master’s degree in social sciences or Gender field or equivalent experience.
  • Fluency in Arabic, Kurdish and English Languages with excellent written and spoken skills in all three languages, including demonstrated ability in writing briefing papers and other information products.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of women’s rights and gender equality, including applied to the education sector and capacity of providing feminist analyses.
  • Extensive experience working on the Syrian context including in different geographical areas.
  • Strong and demonstrated knowledge of and high level of networking with Syrian civil society organizations, especially women’s rights CSOs, in the different geographical areas of Syria.
  • Capacity to make bridges between the different communities targeted by the project.
  • Sound understanding of education system and challenges in the different geographical areas of Syria especially when it comes to gender-sensitivity and inclusion.
  • Sharp research and interview skills

The maximum budget for this assignment is 23 033 EUR for an estimated 140-150 working days depending on experience. The budget should include the expert fees (unit cost, number of working days and total value) as well as the breakdown for the estimated cost (international travel, accommodation, local transportation, lunch/dinner, etc.) to participate in the following activities: one lobby trip in Geneva (3 days), one lobby trip in Brussels (3 days), one conference in Berlin (one day).
