Istituto Oikos has been working in Lebanon since 2016, when the programme of the Nubian Ibex reintroduction in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve launched the fruitful collaboration with the local NGO Al-Shouf Cedar Society (ACS), specifically created for the Reserve management. Besides the Nubian Ibex programme, Istituto Oikos in Lebanon is currently running larger projects in the fields of biodiversity, conservation of natural resources, water management in agriculture, food security.

Job Description

We are looking for a national project coordinator with a background in forest, agronomy / agroecology and/or natural areas’ management.

The selected candidate will be working within a three years project funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in the field of Climate Change resilience, aiming to ensure the conservation and sustainable management of mountain ecosystems in three Lebanese Nature Reserves: the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR), the Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve (JMBR) and the recently established Mount Hermon Nature Reserve (MHNR). The goal will be pursued through an integrated approach that includes: agro-forestry-pastoral landscape planning, implementation of concrete actions for the restoration of ecosystem services in priority sites for each Reserve, promotion of the use of biomass with the dual objective of sustainability of energy consumption and reduction of climate-related risks.

Oikos will be the leading manager of the Project and will be supported at local level by the Al-Shouf Cedar Society (ACS) and the Association for the Protection of Jabal Moussa (APJM) as well as in coordination with the Municipality of Rashaya.

The coordinator will assist in the implementation of all the activities foreseen by the project and will dialogue and interact with the managers, technicians and communities’ members of the three Lebanese reserves and international consultants, under the supervision of the Expatriated Project Manager. The selected person should be therefore able to suitably liaise with a wide range of stakeholders.

 

Main duties

Oikos is seeking to hire a national project coordinator (Lebanese National) who is passionate about environment and nature, aiming at supporting projects and activities that positively contrast the impact of climate change, with a strong interest in supporting social and economic development of rural communities.

She/he will support and assist the project manager to maintain and monitor project plans, schedules, work hours, budget, and expenditures, as well as prepare planning and reporting for all the activities of the project ResiLANDPromoting resilience to climate change through planning, capacity development and integrated land management:

In particular:

  • She/he will actively support and assist the project manager in all the activities related with landscape restoration of agricultural and forestry degraded areas in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR), the Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve (JMBR) and the Mont Hermon Natural Reserve (MHNR), including site identification, planning, implementation, reporting and follow-up;
  • She/he will actively support and assist the national and international staff in field and office activities needed for the preparation and drafting of the new management plans for SBR and JMBR and for MHNR guidelines, including field surveys and reports;
  • She/he will be supporting the organization and reporting of the project training programme within the field of forestry and agriculture management, forestry landscape restoration and the development of agro-forestry value chains;
  • She/he will be responsible to supervise the cash for work fund, with regular meetings with local partners and field visits;  
  • She/he will provideassistance in organizing meetings with local authorities, local communities and national stakeholders, in coordination with local partners.
  • She/he will be assisting and verifying the proper logistics for meetings, workshops, roundtables and conferences;
  • She/he will be involved in the preparation of minutes of meetings, reports, PPTs, attendance sheets, agenda etc.
  • She/he will support the PM in conducting monitoring and evaluation activities, and in particular in collecting indicators, according to the internal monitoring system designed by the MEAL expert of Oikos.
  • She/he will actively support in the elaboration of proposals for national and international call for tenders focused on the main topics of the project

 

Requirements:

  • Study of agriculture, forestry and environment or biological science
  • Previous experience in project implementation and monitoring, especially focused on forestry and environment
  • Familiarity with international cooperation and international agencies is desirable
  • Effective report writing and analytical skills
  • Able to manage a high workload, meet tight deadlines and prioritize tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
  • Computer literacy in MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Internet surfing; Knowledge of Gis software and Gps device will be a plus
  • Good level of organizational autonomy, ability to dialogue with a variety of stakeholders, both national and international
  • Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of Italian will be a plus
