Basmeh and Zeitooneh started as a group of volunteers dedicated to serving Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The organization was founded by Syrian expatriates currently residing in Lebanon, whose primary goal is to motivate Syrian youth and women that are victimized by the conflict. Basmeh and Zeitooneh’s role has been to find and initiate avenues for those affected by the conflict to develop their skills, and lead a life of dignity.
After one year of hard work and planning, Basmeh and Zeitooneh has rapidly transformed from a small group of Syrian volunteers and youth, into an NGO that is officially registered. In order to achieve a strong framework of capacity building, Basmeh and Zeitooneh has focused on developing programs in partnership with a variety of Lebanese non-governmental organization. Today, organization currently serves an estimated 15,000 Syrians individuals in Beirut alone, and employs 66 full-time employees. The organization now has three locations one in Shatila, one in Burj Al Barajneh, and one in the Bekaa Valley, all of which are in areas with a high volume of refugee populations.
Since the initiation of Basmeh and Zeitooneh, its primary goal is to provide Syrians with a sense of dignity as individuals, and to remedy the approaches of other humanitarian agencies which have reduced them to a mere number. Its mission was to launch an initiative that fills the gaps left by larger humanitarian aid agencies, whose shortcomings stem primarily from bureaucratic burdens. In addition, the organization aims to care for those individuals who are ineligible for aid programs that are provided by international agencies, and who as a result do not obtain any assistance.
Basmeh and Zeitooneh has also launched a series of development projects that aim to revive the sense of dignity among Syrian refugees in Lebanon. In order to achieve this goal, Basmeh and Zeitooneh grants the Syrian people the opportunity to broaden their horizons by developing programs to teach them new professions and offer them new job opportunities.
