Background

The main purpose of this role is to deliver art therapy sessions for youth who were engaged in the response process after the Beirut blast. These sessions will support beneficiaries to be able to think differently about their experience by means of challenging anxious thoughts and changing the problematic coping responses into positive ones. The sessions shall help youth attain further understanding of their experience, regulate their emotions, feel safer in the here and now, and aid them to express feelings through art.

Functions and Responsibilities

The art therapy counselor will have the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct eight days trainings on art therapy with youths
  • Prepare tools and material needed for the trainings
  • Apply necessary therapy techniques and activities, aiding the targeted beneficiaries to identify new strategies that can help them understand their experience, regulate their emotions, feel safer in the here and now, and aid them to express feelings through art
  • Coordinate with the social worker and assist in planning and implementing assessments and surveys as required
  • Maintain records, track the beneficiaries’ progress, and write reports
  • Attend coordination meetings
  • Reflect vision and values of Dawaer when interacting with youth, volunteers, and beneficiaries

Key competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent related to Psychology, Psychotherapy or related fields.
  • Previous experience in working with an NGO and providing art therapy sessions
  • Ability to facilitate support group sessions
  • Active listener with good interpersonal skills and ability to question, reflect and challenge attitudes and beliefs.
  • Able to empathize and build a supportive relationship with beneficiaries.
  • Must be in control of their feelings, thoughts and emotions whilst working with the beneficiaries.
  • Oriented and able to meet strict timelines for outputs.
  • Versatile and adaptable to different cultures and people.

Working Relation and Reporting Arrangement:

The art therapist works under the direct supervision of and reports directly to the project coordinator.
