Legal Fellowship - Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) - Beirut
Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) is a non-profit organization that seeks to foster awareness of and support for democracy and human rights in Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf region. We are searching for a dynamic and eager individual ready to aid ADHRB’s legal projects to promote greater advancement and protection of human rights in the region and someone who is interested in advancing and learning about international legal advocacy, including at the United Nations (UN). The individual will assist in the work of ADHRB’s UN Complaint Program, INTERPOL Red Notice request program, and other related legal projects. This is a remote fellowship located in Beirut, Lebanon and reporting to the Legal Officer and Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities
Legal Fellows will:
- Evaluate primary documentation of human rights violations and prepare victim complaints to be submitted to the UN Special Procedures;
- Help maintain an up-to-date index of victim complaints for ADHRB documentation and advocacy purposes;
- Identify and research pertinent domestic and international law as it pertains to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC);
- Help monitor companies operating with GCC governments to ensure their policies are in line with guidelines which stipulate prevention and/or mitigation of adverse human rights impacts;
- Review previous and current cases to identify broader trends;
- Review, translate, and analyze legal documents in Arabic and English;
- Coordinate with clients on the INTERPOL Red Notice request and removal program;
- Conduct research and analysis of laws and proposed legislation in both Arabic and English;
- Assist in the preparation of legal and advocacy briefs on issues pertaining to United Nations treaty bodies and International Human Rights Law;
- Assist legal projects that promote the implementation of human rights policies in businesses and corporations operating within the GCC region;
- Assist with client interviews as necessary to document human rights violations;
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate of a legal program, with an LLM or Juris Doctor or equivalent degree and:
- Be interested in advancing and learning about international legal advocacy at the UN;
- Be interested in and knowledgeable of human rights issues, particularly with respect to torture, the freedoms of speech, expression, and association, due process rights, and/or prisoners’ rights;
- Have experience applying pertinent international law to fact patterns, particularly in forms similar to those of legal memoranda;
- Have a working knowledge of the United Nations system and human rights mechanisms;
- Demonstrate excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills;
- Be able to master complex human rights issues under tight deadlines with minimal supervision;
- Possess solid organizational and time-management skills;
- Be fluent in Arabic and English;
- Be committed to ADHRB's mission;
- Be able to commit to 40 hours/week for 9 months of employment, from 1 October 2019 to 30 July 2020 (dates flexible).
The Legal Fellowship is an unpaid fellowship position. ADHRB is also willing to act as a host organization for fellows that may receive additional funding from third-party grants or fellowships.
