Description:

Helem is the first LGBTQIA+ rights organization in the Arab world, officially established in Beirut, Lebanon in 2001. Its mission is to lead the struggle for the liberation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Intersex, Transgendered, Queer (LGBTQIA+), and other people with non-conforming sexualities and/or gender identities in Lebanon and the SWANA region from all sorts of violations of their individual and collective civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Our goal is to empower young LGBTQIA+ leaders to advocate for their own liberation. We seek to create initiatives and spaces where our communities can leverage unity through diversity and build power. We protect and support individuals with the resources to resist the harm caused by homophobia and transphobia. We empower our youth through education and community building and mobilize to change the laws, policies, and practices that deny us equality and reduce our quality of life.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented author to create a comprehensive glossary of terms related to LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer), SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity), and SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) in Arabic. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of LGBTQ issues, sexual and reproductive health, cultural sensitivity, and proficiency in both Arabic and English. This project aims to enhance understanding and support for the LGBTQ community by providing clear and accurate definitions of relevant terms.

 Responsibilities

  Research and Compilation:

  •   Conduct thorough research to gather terms and definitions related to LGBTQ, SOGI, and SRHR.
  •   Ensure the glossary includes both common and less widely known terms relevant to these fields.

 Writing and Translation:

  •   Write clear, concise, and accurate definitions for each term in Arabic.
  •   Provide translations and explanations in English where necessary to ensure clarity and understanding.

Cultural Sensitivity:

  •   Ensure all definitions and explanations are culturally sensitive and respectful.
  •   Consider the unique cultural context and social nuances of the Arabic-speaking LGBTQ and SRHR communities.

Collaboration and Consultation:

  •   Work closely with the organization’s communications team, SRHR advocates, and experts on the accuracy and relevance of terms and definitions.
  •   Seek feedback and make necessary revisions to ensure the glossary meets the community’s needs.

Editing and Quality Assurance:

  •   Proofread and edit all entries for grammatical accuracy and consistency.
  •   Ensure the glossary is comprehensive, user-friendly, and accessible to a wide audience.

Project Operation:

  •   Abide to the project timeline and meet deadlines.
  •   Provide regular updates on progress and incorporate feedback promptly to Helem’s communication team.

Qualifications

  •   Educational Background:
  •   Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, Arabic Language, Sociology, Gender Studies, Public Health, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience:

  •   Proven experience in writing, translating, or compiling glossaries, dictionaries, or similar reference materials.
  •   Previous work related to LGBTQ issues, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), advocacy, or community support is highly desirable.

Skills:

  •   Excellent command of Arabic, including proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic and familiarity with regional dialects.
  •   Strong English language skills for translation and communication purposes.
  •   Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading abilities.
  •   Strong research skills and attention to detail.
  •   Ability to handle sensitive topics with care and respect.

Personal Attributes:
