Background:
Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities. The agency pursues its mission through emergency relief services, sustainable community development, civil society and economic development initiatives. Mercy Corps has been present in the Middle East since the 1980s and currently has offices in Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. Working in Lebanon since 1993, Mercy Corps has implemented community development programs focused on promoting economic development and increased opportunity for disadvantaged communities, while responding to emergencies as they emerged in the country. In 2012, the program portfolio shifted in response to the massive refugee influx from Syria and Mercy Corps in Lebanon has solidified its emergency response programming while integrating longer-term development programming by focusing on key sectors: Protection, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Governance and Conflict, and Livelihoods.
Purpose / Project Description:
With funding from the Government of the United Kingdom Mercy Corps is implementing the Improved Networks, Training and Jobs (INTAJ) program aimed at improving the stability and resiliency in target communities in North Lebanon and Beqaa Valley through reduced unemployment, increased income for businesses and improved community and economic networks. The program is focused on three main components: skills development, small and medium enterprise (SME) development, and solid waste and recycling management (SWM/R).
The SWM/R component has been implementing community-based solid waste management and recycling initiatives throughout the country for the past year. The initiatives work through a value chain approach and focus on promoting household sorting at source, improving collection systems and sorting facilities, and building the capacity of local government to manage municipal waste and recycle more. INTAJ is working in Bar Elias, Zahle, Chouf, Jezzine, Nabityeh, Zgharta, Akkar, Koura, and Beirut.
INTAJ is seeking community-based organizations to promote current recycling initiatives and advocate for future inclusion of other communities in their area. This will be done through up to 15 community events that bring together different community groups or villages to promote or advocate for recycling initiatives in their local area.
Organization Objective:
INTAJ will fund up to 15 new or pre planned initiatives. The organization will plan and run a community event promoting local recycling initiatives that will include two or more different nationality, religious or politically affiliated groups of people. The event will be themed around the concept of ‘Working together to address a common problem’ and highlight the benefits to the community of different groups of people working together to implement recycling initiatives. The event can either promote and advocate for INTAJ funded recycling initiatives or other existing recycling community projects.
The Organization will:
Event Planning
Create an idea for an inclusive community event to bring together 2 or more different groups or communities of people to promote local recycling initiatives. Develop a detailed plan of the event activities. Develop a list of the needed equipment and materials for running the event. Liaise with Mercy Corps to procure necessary equipment and items for the event. Develop a communications plan to raise awareness of the upcoming event in the local community. Include different groups of people in the planning, operating and attendance of the event. Invite key local stakeholders, community groups and press to the event. Recruit and train volunteers to run the event activities. Provide a Memorandum of Understanding with the local government representative(s) approving the event Manage the event. Provide a report of event activities and attendance to Mercy Corps upon completion of the event, including photographic evidence. Any other tasks necessary for the event planning.
Selection Process:
Priority will be given to applicants that demonstrate co-funding for an existing or pre-planned activity in INTAJ activity areas. However, new events will be considered if significant value to the promotion or advocacy of INTAJ recycling activities bring together different diverse communities from multiple regions is shown.
INTAJ will review applications on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to submit applications at any time. Only those applications found most promising will be contacted by INTAJ. Target response time will be up to one month from the date of submission.

Budget:To not exceed $5,000. Budget to be used for event related costs only. Budget cannot be used to fund the organization’s staffing or operational costs. All goods and services to be purchased directly by Mercy Corps procurement. Cash transfers will not be given.
