Médecins Sans Frontières - Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an independent international medical relief organization, assisting populations in distress. With our teams we intervene in large-scale acute and chronic epidemics (e.g. measles, Ebola, TB and HIV), in areas of acute or chronic conflict (e.g. refugees, forced displacement, urban violence), in humanitarian crisis (e.g. nutritional programs, refugee and migrant support), in disaster relief (e.g. flooding and earthquakes) and general and specialized basic and secondary health care (e.g. in prisons, basic health care in connection with sexual reproductive health and gender based violence, reconstructive surgery or chronic disease). In all those interventions Mental Health is an integral part of our activities. To manage the Mental Health Activities in various Projects we are looking for either - French - English or Arabic - English speaking

Tasks and Responsibilities

As mental health professional you will be responsible to coordinate and manage the mental health activities and the mental health team of one of our projects. Therefore one of your main tasks will be training and supervising counselors with varying backgrounds. Depending on the profiles that can locally be recruited they might come from completely different working fields, be peers, social workers or mental health professionals. You will have to assess the mental health needs of the target populations. In liaison with the medical, humanitarian and community engagement teams you will develop a context adapted mental health strategy and implement it together with your team.

Currently we are recruiting for our vacancies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Sudan, South Sudan and Afghanistan. The major part of our projects are taking place in acute or chronicle crisis areas and instable contexts. MSF is financed to a high extend by private donors and started as a volunteer movement when it was founded in 1971. We therefore have a policy of modest remuneration for our international workers. All staff on international contracts will receive the same indemnity and benefits during the first year regardless of their qualification, profession and position in the project.

This is an opening for the international movement of MSF. The recruitment process is led by the German office of MSF. After successful recruitment you would integrate the candidate pool of one of the 29 regional MSF offices worldwide depending on your country of residence.

 

Our Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent in clinical or counselling psychology and a valid registration in your country of residence
  • Bilingual in either French - English or Arabic - English
  • A minimum of 2y clinical practice after degree, ideally working with a variety of clients and contexts e.g. trauma, chronic disease, substance use, migrants in both, individual therapy and group / peer work
  • Big plus: Experience in multicultural contexts
  • Big plus: experience in teaching mental health topics to professional and lay students, junior mental health professionals and colleagues in interdisciplinary health teams
  • Big plus: experience in managing teams
  • Big plus: experience in managing mental health programs / activities / structures
  • Living, working or extensive traveling experience in African, Asian or Latin American countries
  • Availability to work abroad for a minimum of 9-12 months
  • Willingness to work in accordance with MSFs humanitarian principles, charter and mission statement
