Background

1. About DRI

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. It has been established in Lebanon since 2016. DRI promotes the political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies and the development of democratic institutions worldwide. Democratic discourse is the basis of our mission and vision. In our work, we facilitate discussion and exchange about national and local governance and the need for a continuous discourse adhering to democratic rules.

In the framework of its project entitled “Independent Voices: Supporting Innovative & Citizen-centric Content Creation in Lebanese Media”, DRI acts as an enabler and facilitator of a systematic collaboration between a larger network of journalists, media makers, and digital content creators following a rights-based approach to shed light on political reform issues and the expansion of civic space. The project is premised on the theory of change that if independent media outlets are supported to create original and fact-based content promoting political reform and if they have the capacity to relay citizen-centric news from local communities, then the Lebanese media discourse will be more immune to false or misleading narratives promoted by politically affiliated media.

1. نبذة عن المنظمة الدولية للتقرير عن الديمقراطية

المنظمة الدولية للتقرير عن الديمقراطية منظمة غير حزبية مستقلّة لا تبغي الربح، مُسجَّلة في برلين. تنشط المنظمة في لبنان منذ العام 2016، وهي تعمل على تعزيز المشاركة السياسية للمواطنين، ومساءلة الهيئات الحكومية، وتطوير المؤسسات الديمقراطية في جميع أنحاء العالم. الخطاب الديمقراطي هو أساس رسالتنا ورؤيتنا، ولذا يقوم عملُنا على تسهيل النقاش والتبادل حول الحوكمة الوطنية والمحلية، وضرورة اعتماد خطاب يلتزم على الدوام بالقواعد الديمقراطية.

تضطّلع المنظمة الدولية للتقرير عن الديمقراطية، في إطار مشروعها "الأصوات المستقلّة: دعم صناعة المحتوى المبتكرة والمتمحورة حول المواطنين في الإعلام اللبناني"، بدور الجهة المُمكّنة والمُيسّرة لتعاون منهجيّ بين شبكةٍ أوسع من الصحافيين/الصحافيات، وصانعي/صانعات الإعلام، وصانعي/صانعات المحتوى الرقمي، تبعاً لنهجٍ قائمٍ على الحقوق من أجل تسليط الضوء على قضايا الإصلاح السياسي وتوسيع الحيّز المدني. يرتكز المشروع إلى نظرية التغيير القائلة بأن وسائل الإعلام المستقلّة، إذا ما حصلت على الدعم لتقديم محتوى مبتكر مستند إلى الحقائق ويشجّع الإصلاح السياسي، وإذا ما كانت لها القدرة على نقل الأخبار المتمحورة حول المواطنين من المجتمعات المحلية، فسيكون الخطاب الإعلامي اللبناني عندئذ أشدّ حصانةً ضدّ السرديات الكاذبة أو المُضلّلة التي تروّجها وسائل الإعلام ذات التبعية السياسية.

2. Project Overview

In this project, which will be initiated in January 2024 and closed in December 2024, we aim at countering mis- and disinformation and the spread of fake news in mainstream media. To do so, we envision selecting young journalists and field correspondents and building their capacities to form a young media community that works together to deliver high-quality media content about topics that are typically overlooked, away from political interference. On the other hand, the project supports media outlets with the created content to gain alternative views in their quest for sustainability and impartiality. 

2. لمحة عن المشروع

ترمي المنظمة من خلال هذا المشروع، الذي سيُطلَق في كانون الثان/يناير  2024ويُختتَم في كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2024، إلى مكافحة المعلومات المغلوطة والمُضلّلة والأخبار المزيّفة في وسائل الإعلام الرئيسة. لهذه الغاية، سيتم اختيار صحافيين/صحافيات ومراسلين/مراسلات ميدانيين من الشباب، وبناء قدراتهم ليشكّلوا مجتمعاً إعلامياً شبابياً يعمل معاً لتقديم محتوى إعلامي عالي الجودة حول مواضيع عادةً ما يجري تجاهلها، وبعيداً عن التدخّل السياسي. فضلاً عن ذلك، سيُزوّد المشروع وسائلَ الإعلام البديلة بالمحتوى الإعلامي الذي جرى إنتاجه كي تحصد وجهات نظر بديلة في سعيها إلى تحقيق الاستدامة والحياد.

3. The Fellowship: What We Offer

DRI is looking for up to 10 Lebanon-based journalists, media makers, and digital content creators (gender equality and geographic diversity will be respected during the selection process) who are interested in developing specific technical skills to create original media content.

Following a baseline capacity assessment to identify competence development needs, the journalists shall be part of a capacity building programme to increase knowledge and skills in the journalistic field. The selected trainees will support and promote citizen-centred engagement on democratic discourse and political reform in Lebanon.

If you are selected for the fellowship programme you will be engaged in the following:

• A capacity-sharing programme on topics such as fact-checking, content creation, collaborative journalism, video reporting, scriptwriting, and social media monitoring (SMM). The training curriculum will be delivered between February and May 2024 and will be specifically tailored to the needs of the participants.
• Creating media content, through project funding, that sheds light on issues that are relevant to context needs, e.g., livelihoods (people-centric journalism, as opposed to politician-centric), deep dive into the root causes of the crisis and a holistic outlook on solutions, public service provision, struggles of young people, women, and girls, migration, debunking common false narratives using the knowledge acquired in the capacity-sharing programme. 
• The selected media content shall be published on the alternative media outlets (such as Daraj, Megaphone, Raseef22, etc.). Outputs will include media articles, digital audio and video content, investigative reports, short documentaries, reels, and more.

An internship opportunity might be available for the most talented media makers with the alternative media outlets.

3. ما نقدّمه في برنامج الزمالة

تبحث المنظمة الدولية للتقرير عن الديمقراطية عن حوالي 10 صحافيين/صحافيات، وصانعي/صانعات إعلام، وصانعي/صانعات محتوى رقمي مقيمين في لبنان (ستُحترَم المساواة بين الجنسَين والتنوّع الجغرافي في عملية الاختيار)، مهتمّين بتطوير مهارات تقنية محدّدة لإنتاج محتوى إعلامي مبتكر.

بعد إجراء تقييم أساسي للقدرات من أجل تحديد الاحتياجات التدريبية، سيشارك الصحافيون والصحافيات في برنامج لبناء القدرات يزيد من معرفتهم ومهاراتهم في المجال الصحافي. سيتولّى المُدرَّبون والمُدرَّبات الذين سيتم اختيارهم من قبل المنظمة دعم وتعزيز المشاركة المدنية في الخطاب الديمقراطي والإصلاح السياسي في لبنان.

إذا وقع الاختيار عليك للمشاركة في برنامج الزمالة،

• فستنضمّ/تنضمّين إلى برنامج لتبادل القدرات حول مواضيع مثل التدقيق في الحقائق، وصناعة المحتوى، والصحافة ،التشاركية والتقارير الإعلامية المُصوَّرة، وكتابة السيناريو، ومراقبة مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي. ستُعقد الدورات التدريبية بين شباط/فبراير وأيار/مايو 2024، وسيكون مُصمَّماً خصّيصاً لاحتياجات المشاركين/المشاركات.
• وستتولّى/تتولّين إنتاج محتوى إعلامي، مموّل من المشروع، يسلّط الضوء على قضايا ذات صلة  بالمواضيع العامة والآنية، مثل سبل العيش (صحافة متمحورة حول المواطنين بدلاً من صحافة متمحورة حول السياسيين)، ويتعمّق في جذور الأزمة، ويتّسم بنظرة شاملة إلى الحلول، ومجال تقديم الخدمات العامة، ونضالات الشباب والنساء والفتيات، والهجرة، ويفضح السرديات الشائعة الكاذبة باستخدام المعرفة المُكتسَبة في برنامج تبادل القدرات.
• سيُنشَر المحتوى الإعلامي المُختار في وسائل الإعلام البديلة (مثل درج، وميغافون، ورصيف22، إلخ). وستتضمّن الإنتاجات الإعلامية مقالات ، ومحتوى رقمي سمعي وبصري، وتقارير استقصائية، وأفلام وثائقية قصيرة، ومقاطع فيديو، وغير ذلك.

قد تُتاح لصانعي/صانعات الإعلام الأكثر موهبةً فرصة تدريب عملي في وسائل الإعلام البديلة.

4. Your Skills & Experience

Required:

• A university degree in journalism, communications, political studies, law,  or relevant field;
• Up to 3 years of working experience and/or internship experience in political news outlets, journalism sector, or similar;
• Ability to speak in front of the camera and to conduct interviews and media reports in public spaces;
• Interest in democratisation, human rights, political reform, and civic engagement, political topics;
• Good journalism writing skills;
• Sense of initiative and the eagerness to learn;
• Strong communication, presentation, and negotiation skills;
• Debate, public speaking and presentation skills are a must;
• Fluency in Arabic;
• Commitment to attend all the capacity-sharing programme sessions;
• Commitment to present at least 2 outputs (media content) during the project implementation period.

Desirable:

• Experience in field video production.
• Knowledge in video editing.
• Knowledge in using video production tools (camera, audio equipment etc.).

4. مهاراتك وخبراتك

المطلوبة:

• شهادة جامعية في الصحافة، أو التواصل، أو العلوم السياسية، أو القانون، أو مجال ذات صلة؛
• ما يصل إلى 3 سنوات من الخبرة المهنية و/أو التدريبية في وسائل إعلام سياسية، أو قطاع الصحافة، أو ما شابه؛
• قدرة على التحدّث أمام الكاميرا، وإجراء المقابلات وإعداد التقارير الإعلامية في الأماكن العامة؛
• اهتمام بالتحوّل الديمقراطي، وحقوق الإنسان، والإصلاح السياسي، والمشاركة المدنية، والمواضيع السياسية؛
• مهارات جيدة في الكتابة الصحافية؛
• روح المبادرة ورغبة في التعلّم؛
• مهارات قوية في التواصل والعرض والتفاوض؛
• مهارات المناقشة والعرض والتحدّث أمام الجمهور ضرورية؛
• إتقان اللغة العربية؛
• الالتزام بحضور جميع جلسات برنامج تبادل القدرات؛
• الالتزام بإنتاج ما لا يقلّ عن محتويَين إعلاميَّين خلال مرحلة تنفيذ المشروع.

المرغوب فيها:

• خبرة في إنتاج مواد مُصوَّرة بالفيديو في الميدان؛
• معرفة في صناعة الفيديو؛
• معرفة في استخدام أدوات إنتاج الفيديو (الكاميرا، ومعدّات الصوت، إلخ).
