Conducting resilience analysis, gender analysis and peace and conflict assessment

arche noVa Overview:

arche noVa – Initiative for people in need is an international organization from Germany. Since its founding in 1992, arche noVa has been dedicated to providing support to people who live in unstable situations caused by crisis, conflicts or natural catastrophes. Whether it is responding to emergency relief, undertaking rehabilitation / reconstruction projects or engaging in long-term development initiatives– arche noVa collaborates closely with local partners and prioritizes the involvement of the beneficiaries right from the start. This approach aligns with organization ‘s fundamental principle: empowering people to become self-sufficient. In Germany, arche noVa hosts the Saxonian Competence Centre for Global Learning and supports various global learning activities, like project days at schools, extracurricular activities as well as adult education or teacher training projects.

arche noVa has been actively involved in Lebanon since 2016, focusing on enhancing living conditions for both Syrian war refugees and the local Lebanese host communities. Our organization places a strong emphasis on addressing the critical areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), food security, and livelihood in the North and Akkar regions. In the Bekaa Valley, we provide support to three schools, ensuring that children from Syrian backgrounds have the opportunity to continue their education.

In order to achieve optimal outcomes, we collaborate extensively with our esteemed local partners, including Tankamel Sawa, MADA, and the Social Support Society and Education (SSSE), in addition to water and agricultural authorities.

Our main field of interventions are:

  • WASH: Construction or repair of water systems in communities, capacity building of staff of relevant local water agencies and partner organizations on water related topics, establishment of community management committees
  • Food Security and Livelihood: Rehabilitation of irrigation sytems and other agricultural infrastructure, training smallholder farmers in sustainable agriculture methods, distribution of seeds and material
  • Education: Providing education for children affected by the Syrian crisis in the Bekaa region, providing school lessons daily, teacher training, construction of new school playgrounds, psycho-social support for children and parents

Project Overview

arche noVa, in partnership with Johanniter and local implementing partners Mada Association, Nabaa, and MAPS, has submitted a concept note for potential funding from BMZ. This partnership highlights the knowledge and commitment of these organizations in seeking support for their important initiatives. The project aims to provide local communities and institutions with the tools and knowledge to effectively handle crises on their own, proactively address recurring challenges, and minimize the negative consequences they may have. In order to achieve lasting solutions, it is necessary to focus on structural transformation.

The main goal of the project is to enhance the resilience of vulnerable women, young adults, and men in Lebanon. This will be achieved by improving livelihoods through skill development for the labor market and income generation, as well as by increasing food security through the promotion of sustainable agriculture and regional value chains. The project will be implemented in North Lebanon, Akkar, Beirut, Beqaa, and South Lebanon. To develop the full proposal effectively, it is crucial to conduct comprehensive resilience, gender, and peace and conflict analyses. These assessments will provide insights into existing vulnerabilities, capacities, and dynamics at the household, individual, and community levels.
