Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated consultant to serve as a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Lexicon Development Consultant for a short-term project spanning July and August 2024. In this role, you will be responsible for developing an SRHR lexicon targeting platform policies and content moderation mechanisms, focusing on collecting online SRHR vocabulary in both English and Arabic languages. The project aims to support the results of the Masarouna Research Study, with the goal of completing the lexicon by the end of August 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Project Lead, Research Unit and Media Unit  to develop a comprehensive plan for collecting online SRHR vocabulary in English and Arabic
  • Conduct extensive research to identify and gather SRHR terminology from diverse online sources, including academic literature, online platforms, and relevant databases. 
  • Organize collected SRHR vocabulary into a structured database, categorizing terms based on relevance to platform policies and content moderation mechanisms. Maintain detailed records of sources and citations for transparency and traceability.
  • Compile the collected SRHR vocabulary into a coherent lexicon, utilizing clear definitions and contextual examples to facilitate understanding and usage. Tailor the lexicon to address specific needs and priorities identified in the Research Study.
  • Translate English SRHR vocabulary into Arabic, ensuring accuracy and cultural appropriateness. Adapt terminology to reflect regional dialects and linguistic preferences as necessary.
  • Write the phonetic transcription of the Arabic lexicon.
  • Conduct thorough reviews and validation processes to verify the accuracy, relevance, and consistency of the developed SRHR lexicon. Address any discrepancies or inconsistencies through revisions and updates.
  • Work efficiently and effectively to meet project deadlines, aiming to complete the SRHR lexicon by the end of August 2024. Communicate proactively with the Project Lead to provide progress updates and address any potential delays.
  • Document the SRHR lexicon development process, including methodologies, findings, and recommendations. Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing key outcomes and insights for dissemination to relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in linguistics, translation, languages, or a related field. 
  • Proficiency in English and Arabic languages, with excellent written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
  • Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) terminology and issues, particularly in the online context.
  • Experience in terminology research, lexicon development, phonetic transcription or related fields, with a demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of regional differences in language usage and terminology preferences.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and data management techniques.
