Media Content Analyst

Introduction

Internews is an international nonprofit with 30 offices around the world. At Internews, we believe everyone deserves trustworthy news and information to make informed decisions about their lives and hold power to account. We train journalists and digital rights activists, tackle disinformation, and offer business expertise to help media outlets become financially sustainable.

In Lebanon, Internews is implementing Advancing Diverse Voices in Lebanon, a 2-years project (2021-2022) funded by the Embassy of Netherlands in partnership with Maharat Foundation. Under this project, Maharat Foundation provided a Basic Journalism Training targeting citizen journalist from under-served communities to address information gaps in their communities.

The training covered the following themes: basic journalism, inclusive journalism, innovation in formats (mobile journalism and other), journalism ethics and storytelling. As direct outputs of this training, each of the 40 engaged participants produced 2 media pieces building on the acquired knowledge and skills from the training and the one-on-one coaching support provided by the Maharat team.

Internews is looking for a consultant to analyze produced media content using Internews’ content analysis tool. The tool aims to assess to what extent each piece is adherent to journalism ethics and professionalism, examining its:

1. Quality and Professionalism (Objectivity and Impartiality; Accuracy; Balance and Fairness; Relevance; Language; and Clarity).
2. Gender Sensitivity and Representation
3. Youth Representation

Tasks

1. Review the 80 media pieces produced by participants.
2. Analyze each piece using Internews’ content analysis tool and give a score for each analyzed criteria and an overall score for each piece.
3. Report on overall content analysis findings and visualize it.

Deliverables and reporting requirements

1. 40 content analysis sheets (using Internews’ content analysis tool) submitted by September 10^th, 2022.
2. 40 content analysis sheets (using Internews’ content analysis tool) submitted by October 31, 2022.
3. 1 report reflecting overall content analysis findings which includes visualization (in English) by November 6^th.

Budget and duration:

Available budget: maximum 3300 USD.

The total duration of the consultancy is 36 days, divided into two periods: 18 days between August and September, and 18 days between October and November.

In cases where the tender includes a team of consultants, their division of work shall be presented.

Ethics and Risk

It is strictly prohibited to share any documents or information without written authorization from Internews.

Assignment Management

The Lebanon Project Manager, Internews MENA Regional Impact and Learning Manager and Senior Program Associate will be overseeing this assignment.

Required qualifications

• Previous experience in content analysis or background in data entry, management, and analysis.  
• Fluency in Arabic language; English for reporting is a must.
• A strong eye for detail and impeccable knowledge of the Arabic written language and grammar.
• Good editorial experience.
• Good understanding of the media landscape in Lebanon.
• University degree or equivalent of relevance for the assignment, such as background in communication, journalism and/or media development.
