The Beirut Urban Lab (Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, AUB) is looking to hire a full-time graphic designer to work on the Lab’s communication/design needs and be part of the visualization unit which produces maps, infographics, and other data visualizations accompanying research efforts carried out by the Lab.  

The designer’s tasks will be to conceptualize, design, and produce maps and other infographics, supporting research efforts around urban issues such as building developments in Beirut, housing and financialization, heritage, recovery, urban governance, and public spaces, among others. The designer will also be responsible for preparing reports and presentations for print and/or digital publishing and producing announcements, posts, web entries, and other forms of graphic communication for the Lab. 

As a junior designer, this person will report to the Visualization Research Coordinator and the critical mapping Research Lead. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Engage in discussion sessions with research teams to better understand research results and/or directions, 
  • Work within a small design team to propose visualization directions for a particular dataset or project 
  • Refine, edit and finalize maps based on decisions taken by the team,  
  • Prepare final artwork of maps aimed for either publishing in print or web (newspaper article, book, exhibition, website, etc) 
  • Prepare final visual material such as posters, event invitations, PowerPoint presentations, etc., supporting the team in presenting and publicizing the Lab’s work,  
  • Occasionally assisting in the logistics for organizing events around data visualization and mapping

Requirements 

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in Graphic design or the equivalent experience, 

Candidates with degrees from a related design discipline (Communication Design, Urban design, Architecture, etc) are welcome to apply.  

Knowledge of desktop publishing software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign…) is required. Knowledge of web publishing software, as well as digital mapping platforms and GIS, is a huge plus. Candidates need to be able to work in English and in Arabic.
