Tobacco Free Initiative
TFI was initiated in 2000 by the family of Antoine Kayrouz after his death due to lung cancer. TFI is the only Lebanese Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to tobacco control.
TFI has built a solid expertise in tobacco control, leading TFI to win the 1st prize award from the World Health Organization in the Middle East in 2008 for the exceptional work achieved in this field, and was also chosen in 2009 by the Ministry of Health to be the only NGO (beside the Consumer Protection Association) to be member in the National Commission on Tobacco Control and in the regional commission for the Middle East. Tobacco Free Initiative enjoys today a strong credibility among all stakeholders: Politicians, ministries, international organizations, NGO’s, universities and schools (TFI has already reached approximately 50,000 students). In a lobbying action, TFI raised in May 2010 a petition for “a tobacco free Lebanon” that was signed by heads of parliamentarians, presidents of professional orders, of non-governmental and governmental organizations. The petition was intended to support a new law that would abide 100% to the International Framework Convention for Tobacco Control.
Tobacco Free Initiative enjoys today a strong credibility among all stakeholders: Politicians, ministries, international organizations, NGO’s, universities and schools (TFI has already reached approximately 50,000 students through its tobacco prevention campaign).Last but not least, TFI has built a network of partners among media channels, mainly LBC and Pikasso, which are leaders respectively in TV and outdoor channels. Heavy anti-tobacco media campaign was undertaken over several months, over and above the extensive participation of the association into peak time TV and radio programs throughout the year.
After the intensive lobbying that TFI members, hand in hand with Indyact and AUB, have extended among deputies to support the election of the new law in the parliament last summer, TFI main objective in 2012 is to make sure that this new law will be implemented on the ground, with high awareness among the population.
It is around this goal of fighting tobacco in Lebanon that we created our coalition with Indyact, with the cooperation of the American University of Beirut.
