Consultant for Developing Training Modules and Conducting Training on Solid Waste Management for School's Teachers

The Consultant will lead on the development of training modules and conducting five training of trainers (ToTs) sessions for 45 teachers and school directors, divided into five groups of nine participants each. Each group will participate in a total of five sessions, contributing to an overall total of 25 sessions aimed at enhancing their capacity in solid waste management and environmental education. The selected consultant will create engaging, interactive modules and facilitate sessions that empower teachers to adopt innovative teaching methods, promoting sustainable practices in the educational community.

Objective

Develop a comprehensive training module (In Arabic and in English) related to solid waste management that covers the sustainable living practices such as waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting, effective lesson planning for engaging students in waste education, environmental requalification and importance of tree planting in promoting environmental sustainability.

Deliver 5 training of trainers (ToTs) sessions for 45 teachers and school directors (9 teacher/director per each school) for a total of 25 training sessions that aim at empowering them in developing new perspectives and in elaborating new teaching methods.

Scope of work

The consultant  will undertake the following tasks:

  • Review the existing methodology prepared by the content development consultant and the documents related to solid waste management project.
  • Develop comprehensive content covering several essential topics to ensure that participants gain a thorough understanding of sustainable living practices. The content should include, but is not limited to, the following modules:
  • Modules (1&2): “Basics of recycling, consumption and everyday life: how to adopt a sustainable approach to your living environment”

The modules shall cover but not limited to:

  • Definition and importance of recycling.
  • Types of recyclable materials (plastic, paper, glass, metals).
  • Understanding consumption patterns and their environmental impact.
  • Practical tips for reducing waste in everyday life.
  • Strategies for adopting sustainable practices at home and in the community.
  • Activities and lesson plans for teachers to implement with students (e.g., recycling projects, waste audits)
  • Module (3&4): “Training new generation for the environmental requalification: how to organize didactical lessons and games on waste education for pupils”.

The modules shall cover but not limited to:

  • Overview of environmental education and its significance.
  • Techniques for organizing effective didactic lessons on waste management for students.
  • Interactive games and activities that promote waste education among pupils.
  • Approaches to engage students in hands-on projects related to waste management.
  • Best practices for integrating environmental topics into various subjects.
  • Assessment methods for evaluating student understanding and engagement.
  • Module 5: Need for seed: introduction to the “International Day of Tree”.

The module shall cover but not limited to

  • History and significance of the International Day of Trees.
  • Planning activities and lessons around tree planting and care.
  • Creating awareness about the importance of trees in the environment.
  • Engaging students in community tree planting initiatives.

Notes:

These modules are specifically developed to equip teachers with the essential knowledge and skills needed to effectively instruct/train students aged 12 to 16 on the importance of solid waste management. The goal is not only to educate but also to inspire students to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to environmental preservation.

The modules will be subject to Mada's approval. The consultant may be required to make revisions until the modules are validated by Mada

The consultant will be responsible for evaluating if any topics need to be added or modified within each module to ensure alignment with the activity's purpose, as outlined in the project documentation.
 

  • Ensure the modules incorporate best practices in environmental education relevant to the target audience.
  • Provide a list of materials that the teachers need to conduct each session for students related to the corresponding modules.
  • Develop a teacher manual for the sessions that outlines session objectives, content, methodologies, and evaluation criteria.
  • Create power point presentation slides, handouts and training materials that are interactive and engaging (In Arabic and English).
  • Conduct five ToT sessions for 45 teachers and school directors (9 teacher/director per each school) for a total of 25 training sessions that include interactive discussions, practical activities, and group exercises that encourage the participants to develop new perspectives and teaching methods.
  • Create teaching materials, including lesson plans, interactive activities, and prepare and conduct pre and post sessions evaluation to evaluate the knowledge of teachers and to track their progress following the training.
  • Provide periodic reports (using a template provided by Mada) to Mada’s Project Manager on progress, attendance, challenges, successes, and next steps
  • Monitor the attendance of participants and report any attendance and dropout issues to Mada’s Project Manager
  • Gather feedback from participants to assess the effectiveness of the training sessions.
  • Provide a final report summarizing the curriculum development, the ToTs for the teachers and directors, outcomes, feedback, recommendations and area of improvement to project manager.
  • Work closely with Mada’s team to understand the context.

Note: Each training session will last approximately 2 to 3 hours, with a 15–20-minute break. The exact duration will be determined by the consultant, who will adjust the timing to best suit each module’s content and learning needs.

Deliverables

-  A comprehensive curriculum documents covering all modules with all the needed materials.

-  Teaching materials, including lesson plans and interactive activities.

- List of materials for the environmental sessions within the schools.

- A training manual for the ToT sessions.

- Reports for the 25 training sessions (five sessions for each group).

- A final report summarizing the curriculum development process, training outcomes, and recommendations for future improvements.

Duration of the mission:

The selected consultant is expected to start developing the modules and training materials in Mid of November 2024 and delivering the training starting December 2024 until the end of January 2025 for the 5 groups of teachers.

Location for the training sessions:

The training sessions will be conducted in villages within the Union of Municipalities of Jurd al-Qaita in Akkar.

The consultant will be responsible for all transportation fees and accommodation fees.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Environmental Science, Education, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in curriculum (Modules) development and/or developing of training materials.
  • Previous experience in providing Training, Education and providing Capacity building/TOT.
  • Demonstrated experience in Waste Management.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage and motivate participants.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to feedback.
  • Experience working with NGOs is a plus.
