Call for Personal Stories on Women & Ecology

KW is working on a publication that brings together feminist and environmental/ecological frameworks and movements. This upcoming book, which will be published in Spring 2022, includes different forms of writing: research papers, critical reflections, and oral histories.

At this time, KW welcomes submissions of short personal narratives and reflections that tell stories related to the environment from gendered perspectives.

The topics of your submission can include but need not be limited to:

  • Stories of your childhood memories of picnics by the river or by the corniche, and the changes that have undergone these places; stories of social and religious rituals rooted in the seasons; reflections on your, or your family’s, relationship to the sea, to a piece of land, or a natural landmark…
  •  A personal exploration of what environmentalism or relationship to nature means to you if you’re from a city in Lebanon—or if you live and move between Beirut and a more rural village; how does human nature fit into your story about nature that allows for a more reciprocal relationship; how has environmental and feminist organizing been shaped by the particularity of Beirut’s landscape and social geography…
  • A story or stories from a community heavily affected by the abuse of nature: a mountain of garbage, a quarry, a dam, the channeling of sewage lines into rivers and sea; a story that reflects how your relationship to the beach or to the land has changed in light of the current economic collapse, the Aug. 4 explosion, the fuel crises and covid…

These are some suggested ideas, but we welcome your exploration of other topics through a personal story and intimate point of view.

We encourage submissions that include a gendered perspective and feminist lens; and we invite submissions that are experimental, poetic and collaborative.
