Internships at International Alert

 
Alert Interns are viewed as valued members of the staff team and it is understood that they provide essential input into achieving the goals of the organisation. 
In recognition of their contribution, Interns are provided with the opportunity to gain valuable experience working within Alert - an international NGO, with a reputation for being a leader in its sector. During their time with Alert, interns can expect to gain an understanding of the work of International Alert’s field programmes and to develop relationships with other peacebuilding organisations. We believe that the experience gained working alongside other skilled Alert staff, will benefit those wishing to focus on peace-building as an element of their future career.
With the support of their supervisor and colleagues Interns will develop the confidence and capability to work either autonomously or as a member of a team contributing to quality peace-building solutions.  They will also focus on developing high-level interpersonal and liaison and other skills to enable them to form strong working relationships with Alert’s partners, contacts, and programme staff across the organisation. Interns will have the opportunity to work within a supportive and supervised environment, and will be provided with all necessary on-the-job assistance. International Alert Internships aim to provide the ideal springboard for candidates interested in contributing to a focused professional peacebuilding organisation, whilst developing their own skills and capabilities in this important field.

Department Description

 
Alert currently has five projects in Lebanon along the axis of supporting peace, stability, dialogue and security sector in Lebanon. These programmes are in different stages of implementation and development. Some of them are at a stage of setting up dialogue and dissemination activities with a wide range of stakeholders, some of them are engaged in reporting and analysing data and information collected through different means, others are in the launching stage with the establishment of relationships and setting up a framework of action… Still, the Lebanon program as a whole is pursuing a demanding agenda of raising the company profile, setting an overall communications strategy and developing programming strategies.
 

Job Purpose

You will be part of the Alert Lebanon Team and your main focus will be on supporting the different projects. You will be involved in the implementation, research, development, analysis, relationship building and monitoring of parts of the projects. This is a very broad role and your time and efforts will be coordinated and timed clearly so that you are able to work closely with senior colleagues to deliver on the different targets.
 Through your work in the six months, you will be able to develop project managing skills, monitoring and evaluation techniques, programming and strategy building methods, report writing and communications practices.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will provide assistance to project managers in different areas of their work.
Main Tasks:

Conduct research and analysis on peacebuilding related issues
Attend meetings and draft minutes
Assist in the documentation and implementation of project’s activities.
Assist in organizing, preparing and running meetings, workshops and conferences
Engage in filing and archiving activities when needed
Monitor news
Assist in gathering of monitoring data for project reports
Undertake field visits to implement project activities
Take care of travel arrangements
Any other tasks as may be reasonably required

Summary terms and conditions

Working hours

There is a standard 35 hours week, with some flexibility around start and finish times to be agreed with the line manager. All staff are required to work core hours 10am - 4pm.

Work permits

Unfortunately, International Alert does not have sufficient funding to make work permit applications on behalf of potential candidates and therefore can only consider applications from people with the right to work in Lebanon.
