Objective:
In consultation with Dawlaty staff and partners, design the digital infrastructure of the Syrian Oral History Archive (SOHA).
Background:
Dawlaty started SOHA in August 2016 and has collected testimonies from Syrian narrators to document their experiences and priorities, with a view to developing their life narratives into materials for research, programming and advocacy. Dawlaty sought to explore the experiences and assess the needs of women relatives of the missing and the detained. This project also helps us to examine issues related to transitional justice with youth and, including an examination of the factors of exclusion and marginalization within their communities.
Dawlaty is working with partners to create an oral history archive through the collection of life narratives using in-depth interviewing techniques with informed participants.
Dawlaty seeks to hire a consultant to work with the data management officer to create an archiving protocol and design the digital infrastructure of the archive. The archiving protocol should include the workflow, guidelines, and tools for archiving and information management in order to make sure that the information that Dawlaty and partners are collecting is as standard compliant as possible. The digital infrastructure should include the various aspects of the workflow; material description, storage, preservation, and access.
Process
The consultant will be expected to:

Review various standards of archiving protocols and digital infrastructures of archives of similar nature

Identify different options to include in the archiving protocol

Identify and recommend various options for designing the infrastructure of the archive

Familiarize oneself with the aims, goals, and future ambitions of the project

Review the available framework of the project, its methodology, and outcomes till date

Review some of the collected narratives in possession

Carry out any needed consultations and interviews with potential users of the archive to better understand the expectations from the archive

Work with and provide needed training for the data management officer on archiving skills

Design the infrastructure of the archive and recommend future steps to realize the software

Deliverables

Archiving protocol including workflow, guidelines, and tools for archiving and information management

Design of the digital infrastructure including material description, storage, preservation, and access.

 
Qualifications:

Relevant graduate qualifications in information technology and database management

Demonstrated experience in managing oral history archives

Working knowledge of Arabic and English

Knowledge of and experience working in Syrian context strongly preferred

Knowledge of transitional justice, civil society, civic and democratic values and civil disobedience strongly preferred
