Research Papers on Curriculum Reform in the Arab World

Part of CLS’s efforts to promote a dialogue on education and curriculum reform, the Centre for Lebanese Studies (CLS) is organising a regional workshop focusing on Curriculum Reform in the Arab World. This workshop engages with curriculum reform in the region with a social justice-oriented approach. The workshop will take place in March 2022.

This workshop builds on CLS’s first conference on curriculum reform held in January and February 2021. The conference entitled “Rethinking the Curriculum in Lebanon and the Arab World – Reconciling ideologies and Pedagogies” engaged over 600 participants and 70 speakers from 15 different countries. The participants were researchers, academics, students, practitioners, and policymakers mainly from Arabic-speaking countries.

The conference explored current debates concerning curriculum theories, ideologies, approaches, and normative and empirical questions related to what to teach for future generations, why and how. It also examined the role of teachers in curriculum planning, reform, and implementation and opened the space for a critical engagement with the idea of the process of curriculum reform, including the main actors and the implications of the political, socio-economic and cultural contexts as well as sources of financial and technical support. This workshop also builds on the main findings of the eight National Consultation sessions with main actors in the community across Lebanon in July and August 2021, led by the CLS.

CLS aims to continue facilitating the space to engage with and critically discuss issues related to curriculum reform with a social justice lens. For that, CLS is organising this specialist workshop in March 2022 with the aim to:

1. Produce key documents based on solid research from the region that will lead knowledge production and policy change in the field of curriculum planning, design, and reform.
2. Open the space for critical discussion on the issue of curriculum reform in the region in light of the political, socio-economic, and cultural changes that have been occuring in the region for over a decade and continue to unravel today.
3. Link the role of the curriculum in these changes and formulate a vision for a better future for education in our region and our societies.
4. Allow for more equitable and independent knowledge production processes related to curriculum reform from and for the region.

The main theme that the workshop will focus on attempts to reform the curriculum in the Arab World. In particular, we look for contributions around any or more of the following themes:

• The ideologies underpinning curriculum reform in the region. 
• Processes of curriculum reform:

- How are curricula being reformed?

- What is informing curriculum reform?  

- Who is participating in curriculum reform processes, and who is being excluded?

• How to unpack power dynamics that manifest in the processes of curriculum reform, for example: class, race, ethnicity, and/or coloniality.

• Curriculum in higher education and knowledge production:                                                                                                      - How are curriculum studies being taught and approached in initial teachers’ preparations and in research ?                     -Who is contributing to the thinking, conceptualising and debating of curriculum?  

CLS is calling on researchers, academics, and practitioners in the region to conduct empirical research or an in-depth desk review on one of the above-stated themes. This research will be presented in the workshop in March 2022 and later published in a special issue.

CLS will commission six research projects to be presented during the workshop. Interested academics, researchers, and practitioners are encouraged to submit a 500-words abstract in Arabic or English that focus on one of the themes mentioned above.

The abstract should cover:

• The main research question
• The research methodology
• The significance of the study and its practical implications

Once the abstract has been selected, the researcher will be asked to submit a 5,000 words article of publishable quality. This article will be presented in the workshop and later published in a special issue.

We encourage contributions that adopt a critical and intersectional lens when approaching the issue of curriculum reform.

أوراق بحثية حول إصلاح المناهج في العالم العربي

كجزء من جهود مركز الدراسات اللبنانية لتعزيز الحوار حول إصلاح التعليم والمناهج ، ينظم مركز الدراسات اللبنانية ورشة عمل إقليمية تركز على إصلاح المناهج في العالم العربي. تهدف ورشة العمل الى نقاش إصلاح المناهج المدرسية في المنطقة من خلال نهج يركز على العدالة الاجتماعية. ستقام ورشة العمل في مارس/آذار2022

تأتي ورشة العمل هذه بناءا على النتائج الأساسية التي صدرت من المؤتمر الأول لمركز الدراسات اللبنانية حول إصلاح المناهج، والذي عُقد في كانون الثاني (يناير) وشباط (فبراير) 2021. وقد شارك أكثر من 600 مشارك/ة و 70 متحدثً/ة من 15 دولة مختلفة. كان المشاركون/ات و هم من الباحثين/ات والأكاديميين/ات والطلاب/ات و المختصين/ات وصانعي/ات السياسات من البلدان الناطقة باللغة العربية بشكل رئيسي. ركز المؤتمر على المناقشات الحالية المتعلقة بنظريات المناهج والأيديولوجيات والأسئلة المتعلقة بما يجب تعليمه للأجيال القادمة و الهدف منها وكيفية تطبيقها. كما استطلع المؤتمر دور المعلمين/ات في تخطيط المناهج الدراسية وإصلاحها وتنفيذها، وفتح المجال لنقاش عملية إصلاح المناهج الدراسية بما في ذلك الجهات الفاعلة الرئيسية والآثار المترتبة على السياقات السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية وكذلك مصادر الدعم المالي و التقني.

أن هذه الورشة تعتمد ايضا على النتائج الرئيسية لجلسات التشاور الوطنية الثماني التي قادها مركز الدراسات اللبنانية مع الجهات الفاعلة الرئيسية في المجتمع في جميع أنحاء لبنان في شهري يوليو / تموز وأغسطس/آب 2021

يهدف مركز الدراسات اللبنانية إلى الاستمرار في خلق مساحات لنقاش القضايا المتعلقة بإصلاح المناهج الدراسية ومناقشتها بشكل نقدي من منظور العدالة الاجتماعية. لذلك ينظم مركز الدراسات اللبنانية هذه الورشة المتخصصة في آذار 2022 بهدف:

1- إنتاج معرفة على أساس بحوث علمية متينة من المنطقة التي ستقود الى تغيير السياسات في مجال تخطيط المناهج وتصميمها وإصلاحها

2- فتح المجال للنقاش النقدي حول مسألة إصلاح المناهج الدراسية في المنطقة في ضوء التغيرات السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية في المنطقة المستمرة

3- ربط دور المنهج في هذه التغييرات وصياغة رؤية لمستقبل أفضل للتعليم في منطقتنا ومجتمعاتنا ككل

4- السماح بعمليات إنتاج معرفية أكثر إنصافًا واستقلالية تتعلق بإصلاح المناهج الدراسية من المنطقة ومن أجلها

الموضوعات الأساسية التي ستركز عليها ورشة العمل هي:

• الأيديولوجيات التي قامت عليها محاولات إصلاح المناهج في المنطقة
• عملية إصلاح المناهج:
• كيف يتم إصلاحها؟
• ما هي العوامل التي تؤثر على اصلاح المناهج؟
• من يشارك في هذه العمليات ومن يتم استبعاده؟ 
• ماهي طبيعة ديناميكيات القوة في عملية إصلاح المناهج الدراسية مثل الطبقة والعرق و الاستعمار
• المناهج الدراسية في التعليم العالي وإنتاج المعرفة:
• كيف يتم تدريس المناهج والتعامل معها في برامج تدريب المعلمين/ات والبحث؟
• من يساهم في التفكير والمفاهيم ومناقشة المناهج؟

بناءا على ذلك، يدعوا مركز الدراسات اللبنانية الباحثين/ات والأكاديميين/ات و الختصيين/ات في المنطقة لإجراء بحث عملي أو مراجعات اكاديمية متعمقة حول أحد الموضوعات المذكورة أعلاه. سيتم عرض هذا البحث في ورشة العمل في مارس 2022 وسيتم نشره لاحقًا في عدد خاص.

سوف يختار مركز الدراسات اللبنانية ستة مشاريع بحثية لعرضها في الورشة. نشجع الأكاديميين/ات والباحثين/ات و المختصين/ات المهتمين/ات على تقديم ملخص من 500 كلمة باللغتين العربية أوالإنجليزية تركز على أحد الموضوعات المذكورة أعلاه.

يجب أن يغطي الملخص: سؤال البحث الرئيسي ، ومنهجية البحث ، وأهمية الدراسة ، والآثار العملية للدراسة.

بمجرد اختيار الملخص ، سيُطلب من الباحث/ة تقديم مقالة من 5000 كلمة ذات جودة و قابلة للنشر. سيتم تقديم هذه المقالة في ورشة العمل ونشرها لاحقًا في عدد خاص.

نشجع المساهمات التي تتبنى منظورًا نقديًا و تقاطعياً عند التعامل مع قضية إصلاح المناهج الدراسية.
