Gender-Transformative Reporting in Modern Media

Overview

ABAAD- Resource Centre for Gender Equality is hosting a workshop series aimed at introducing and streamlining gender-transformative reporting tools by collaborating with independent journalists and content creators from the all over the MENA region.

The organization’s aim is to promote ethical media through safe, responsible, and survivor-centred storytelling that would help reshape the narrative around taboo topics relating to women’s rights, gender-based violence, sociocultural norms, SRHR, and more as well as encourage public opinion to rethink their own perceptions and biases.

Background

This workshop series comes as part of the Generation Gender program -a five-year advocacy program that aims at forging gender-just and violence-free communities and promoting equal access to rights by positively influencing public opinion, laws and policies, as well as strengthening civil society.

With women and girls being amongst the most vulnerable demographic groups, particularly in volatile and conflict-prone contexts, it is important their voices be amplified and their plight be highlighted.

Description

Through this workshop series, participating journalists and content creators will be invited to explore the below themes:

• Women and girls in international conventions and agreements;
• Exploring sociocultural norms in the MENA region and their impact on women and girls;
• Guiding principles around gender-based violence;
• Ethical principles and standards for media coverage of women's rights issues;
• Gender transformative media coverage;
• Ethical data collection and do no harm principles.

Following the completion of the workshop series, participants will have the unique opportunity to showcase their work in an exhibition.

Eligibility criteria

• Applicant must be an independent journalist/content creator. This may include investigative journalists, photojournalists, creators producing informative videography content, storytellers etc.;
• Applicant must have a public platform;
• Applicant’s work must focus/touch on women’s rights, GBV, SRHR, sociocultural norms or other related topics;
• Applicant must be based or be able to be present in Beirut, Lebanon*.

*Kindly note that this workshop series will exclusively take place in person. All travel and accommodation expenses incurred will be covered by the organization.

لمحة عامة

أبعاد – مركز الموارد للمساواة بين الجنسين ينظم سلسلة من ورشات العمل التي تهدف إلى تعريف وتنظيم أدوات التقارير التحويلية من حيث الدور الاجتماعي بالتعاون مع صحفيين/ات مستقلين/ات ومنتجي/ات المحتوى من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا. تهدف المنظمة إلى تعزيز الأخلاقيات الاعلامية من خلال السرد الآمن والمسؤول والمبني على المقاربة المرتكزة حول الناجين/ات من العنف، مما سيساعد في إعادة صياغة المواضيع المحظورة المتعلقة بحقوق النساء، والعنف القائم على الدور الاجتماعي، والقيم والتقاليد الاجتماعية، والصحة الإنجابية والجنسية وغيرها، بالإضافة إلى تشجيع الرأي العام على إعادة النظر و التفكير في تصوراتهم/ن وتحيزاتهم/ن المرتبطة بالمواضيع اعلاه.

السياق العام

تأتي سلسلة ورشات العمل هذه ضمن  برنامج – Generation Gender program- برنامج مناصرة يستمر لمدة  5 سنوات ويهدف الى بناء مجتمعات تتسم بالشراكة بين الرجال والنساء وخالية من العنف المبني على الدور الاجتماعي، اضافة الى تعزيز الوصول العادل للحقوق عبر التأثير الايجابي على الرأي العام، والقوانين والسياسات، كذلك، عبر تعزيز المجتمع المدني.

وباعتبار النساء والفتيات من الفئات الاكثر هشاشة في المجتمع، وخاصة اثناء النزاعات، من المهم اعلاء اصواتهن وتسليط الضوء على محنهن.

شرح

خلال سلسلة ورشات العمل، سيتم دعوة الصحافيون/ات وصانعي/ات المحتوى الى التمعن والاطلاع على المواضيع ادناه:

• النساء والفتيات في المعاهدات والاتفاقيات الدولية
• التمعن في الاطار القافي والاجتماعي في منطقة الشرق الاوسط وتداعياتها على النساء والفتيات
• المبادئ التوجيهية للعنف القائم على الدور الاجتماعي
• المبادئ والمعايير الاخلاقية للتغطية الاعلامية حول مواضيع حقوق النساء
• المقاربة التحويلية من حيث الدور الاجتماعي في التغطيات الاعلامية
• اخلاقيات جمع البيانات ومبدأ عدم الأذية

 بعد الإنتهاء من سلسلة ورش العمل هذه، سيتاح للمشاركين/ات الفرصة لإستعراض الأعمال الخاصة بهم خلال معرض.

الشروط العامة للمشاركة

• ان يكون صحفيا/ة / صانع/ة محتوى مستقل/ة . وقد يتضمن صحافي/ة استقصائي/ة، مصور/ة صحافي/ة، روائيين/ات...
•  ان يكون لديه منصة اعلامية عامة
• ان يرتكز عمله/ا على مواضيع حقوق النساء، العنف القائم على الدور الاجتماعي، الصحة الجنسية و الانجابية، او اي موضوع آخر مرتبط،
• ان يكون موجودًا او قادرًا على الحضور الى بيروت، لبنان*.
