Description: 

Under the direct supervision of the Healthcare Officer, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) specialist will be responsible for providing ECD and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) support and education to vulnerable caregivers through individual counseling and awareness sessions at the community and PHC levels.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Provide support and counseling to pregnant women and mothers identified with difficulties in breastfeeding and/or sub-optimal infant and young child feeding practices and to caregivers of children 0-23 months at the community and through mother baby corners (MBCs)
  • Provide Early childhood development (ECD) support and education to vulnerable caregivers through individual counseling and awareness sessions
  • Assist and give one-on-one counseling sessions related to IYCF for PLWs and caregivers of children 0-23 months referred from the IYCF national hotline
  • Conduct regular follow-up visits/phone calls to all women assisted, especially mothers of children under 6 months, to ensure exclusive breastfeeding.
  • Refer cases for specialized care when needed
  • Give awareness sessions to spread the knowledge among vulnerable families about optimal IYCF-E practices and ECD.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching to the PHC staff on IYCF and ECD counselling whenever needed
  • Distribute micronutrient supplements to PLWs and children when needed
  • Provide education on the Law 47/2008, and report violations and unsolicited infant formula donations, as per the developed IYCF SOP
  • Report daily and weekly to the health and nutrition area coordinator on all conducted activities, by completing the required reporting forms and databases.
  • Keep the necessary files for each case visited and counseled.
  • Attend relevant training sessions as required
  • Attend IOCC staff meetings when required.
  • Perform other duties as necessary

 

Qualifications                                                       

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Native Arabic speaker and fluency in English is necessary
  • Strong social, interpersonal, communication and intercultural skills
  • Team player
  • Able to meet deadlines
  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

Education

  • B.S. in midwifery (preferred) or in any related field

Experience

  • At least 3 years work experience; or 1 year work experience with M.Sc.
  • Previous experience in NGOs and humanitarian field is an advantage
  • Previous experience in IYCF and ECD program implementation is an advantage

Working Conditions

  • Stationed in the field in Nabatiyeh and Marjeyoun areas
  • Visits to Beirut office for meetings, trainings and relevant paperwork.
  • It is preferable that candidate resides in the area of interest
  • The candidate should have his/her own car.
