Assessment of organic waste management challenges - Algeria

Conducted an assessment of organic waste management in Bougara and Boufarik wholesale vegetable markets in Blida province to address waste management challenges.

 

Overall Objectives: 
The objective was to assess of the current state of organic waste management in two of the largest wholesale vegetable markets of Bougara and Boufarik within the Blida province. In addition to developing a feasibility study to a composting operation serving the two markets.

Results: 
We designed a composting facility that proposed at least 10 new jobs. It can treat organic waste coming from Bougara and Boufarik markets. Two proposed financial models were presented for operating the facility. Additionally, we assessed the potential market for compost and identified best practices for farmers. The study results included a high-level design for an 18 tons per day of organic waste facility, a quantification and characterization study on both markets, two financial models were proposed to have a feasible operation (led by either Private or Public sector).
