The Lebanese Observatory for Workers & Employees Rights (LWRO) is implementing a project entitled “Women Leaders in Civic Spaces; Breaking Barriers towards Grander Vision”

The project first examines the underlying structural inequities & barriers that hinder women effective participation in trade unions decision making bodies and committees, implementing community sensitization and mobilization targeted interventions aiming at raising awareness on the importance role of women leadership participation in unions decision-making bodies, specifically affiliated women members in four  syndicates and trade unions, enhance women knowledge and legal literacy on decent work, Lebanese  labor law and legislation and democratic trade union standards, building the capacity of women potential candidates on networking and building a supportive base, developing the demands program and carrying out an election and media campaigns.

The senior researcher will lead the assessment of factors and barriers hindering women's leadership in union-elected bodies, focusing on legal, social, economic, and individual/institutional levels. The assessment aims to inform evidence-based interventions for enhancing women's participation in union decision-making bodies.

Responsibilities:

  1. Desk Review:

Conduct a comprehensive desk review using reliable data from previous studies.

  1. Qualitative Approach:

Develop and implement a qualitative approach, utilizing triangulation methods. Organize and conduct 11 focus groups, including 4 in the Union of Teachers in private schools, 3 in the NSSF workers union, and 2 each in the AUB workers union and unions of public hospitals workers in Beirut and South Lebanon. Engage women members in the general assembly, executive council, and council of delegates in the focus groups.

  1. In-depth Review:

Conduct an in-depth review of the internal by-laws and their enforcement in the four selected syndicates. Evaluate the election process, democratic standards, and gender mainstreaming within the syndicates.

  1. Roundtable Discussions:

Organize and facilitate two roundtable discussions.

The first roundtable will include women who participated in the focus groups (estimated 30 participants).

The second roundtable will involve union experts, activists, the national coalition for free trade unions established by LWRO, and lawyers (estimated 20 participants).

  1. Report Compilation:

Compile an assessment report including the desk review, findings from focus groups and in-depth reviews, and recommendations for evidence-based interventions.

Present the report to relevant stakeholders and project partners.
