Emergency intervention for tents settlements - Islamic Relief lebanon

This winter is proving to be one of the toughest for thousands of families displaced inside Syria and seeking refuge in Lebanon. More than 11,000 in Lebanon alone have so far been hit by a wave of snow, heavy rain and strong wind, forcing many of them to evacuate their already impoverished tents.

A response to the extreme weather is underway as high winds, rain and snow across Lebanon continue to have a severe impact on people and their living conditions, especially in informal settlements. To date, 151 informal settlements across the country have been found heavily impacted. One child has been reported missing.

A five-day storm that battered Lebanon with heavy rain and snow has had a devastating effect on thousands of refugees living in tents dotting eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa valley, displacing many whose shelters were either flooded or destroyed by snow.

Other storms are in the way, and this intervention will come to prevent damage and life loss among the affected families.

IRL will be supporting these refugees through and will consider specific needs for each camp according to the current infrastructure, area, landscape, and number of families living in. it will generally consider the following:

Establish rain water tunnels between tents to provide safe pathway for rain water.

Create edges around tents to prevent rainwater gathering and pools from affecting the tents.

Create edges for the whole camp to prevent water from flooding from other sides to reduce the water level inside the camp during floods.

Upgrade tents base by level up the tents to make space for the water on the ground before entering the tent inside.

Work must start on Monday 28/01/2019 and should end in 4th of Febraury 2019.
