Background and Summary:
The idea of the coalition started taking shape after several organizations, activists and women human rights defenders (WHRDs) met in Cairo during June 17 - 20, 2013, based on an invitation by Nazra for Feminist Studies. The meeting resulted in the formation of a Steering Committee that was formed from WHRDs who volunteered from different countries, and they took the responsibility to work on formulating the suggestions and ideas that were raised in June 2013. They also completed the basic and necessary steps needed to build a strong base for the coalition of WHRDs in the MENA region. Two meeting for the Steering Committee were conducted during the periods June 2 - 5, 2014 in Amman, Jordan, and August 6 - 8,2014 in Beirut, Lebanon, respectively. They worked on drafting the code of conduct, internal regulations, objectives of the coalition and membership criteria. The 2 referred to meetings also included the design of an internal system for the transition period until the beginning of 2015, where the first general assembly for the coalition was conducted in February 2015 with the presence of 14 WHRDs from different countries in the region, where the internal regulations were confirmed, a strategic plan was drafted and the first elections for the coalition's Executive Committee were conducted, in addition to appointing consultants for the different sub-regions and handing the coordination of the coalition to SAWT AL NISWA collective.
Coalition Objectives:
The General Assembly confirmed and certified a general objective for the coalition, which is the building of sub-regional coalitions that are coherent, effective and work as the basis or a group of local groups, and provides support for WHRDs to raise the issues they work on in a safe and effective environment via strengthening protection and enabling mechanisms for WHRDs, disseminating the concept of WHRDs and raising awareness about the role they play, in addition to disseminating the culture of respect and support for WHRDs.
