Role of Solidarity in Fighting GBV – Case of women’s groups in Tripoli.

Background

Oxfam is a global movement of people who are working together to end the injustice of poverty. Oxfam has been working in Lebanon since 1993. We provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people affected by conflict, and we promote economic justice and good governance, and women’s rights. Oxfam also works with local partners to contribute to the protection and empowerment of marginalized women and men.

Oxfam has been working in Tripoli with vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian refugees, providing cash and protection services, and supporting community-led advocacy.

According to Oxfam’s protection monitoring and needs assessments, women have reported feeling unsafe in public spaces, avoiding going out after a certain hour, avoiding unlit streets, and watching what they wear. While Syrian women face an added layer of threat based on their nationality, Lebanese women also reported high levels of violence against them, while stressing that these are issues that are not discussed openly.

In Tripoli, two women’s groups (20 women) and two youth groups (20 youth) meet regularly to discuss concerns, identify solutions, and exchange information.

16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign, known as 16 Days Campaign, is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November until Human Rights Day on December 10. It’s a time where many organizations and individuals speak up against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in order to raise awareness.

Objective

Oxfam is looking for a talented photographer to support in producing a photo-series that highlights how women’s groups in Tripoli have had a positive effect in raising awareness on GBV.

The photo-series will aim to:

  • Shed light on GBV in Lebanon, more particularly in the area of filming, Tripoli
  • Highlight the work of women groups vis-à-vis fighting against GBV
  • Portray the importance of solidarity among women and how it facilitates conversation, awareness, and protection especially about GBV

Format

Oxfam is looking to produce a series of images that highlight the importance of community solidarity in combatting GBV, through portraying the model in which women’s groups work in Tripoli.

Ahead of the photo-series, Oxfam will host roundtables to discuss the topic of solidarity with women from the groups to identify key points and messages to relay, which will then be discussed with the consultant.

The overall outcome will be shared as part of the 16 days of activism campaign.
