Transcriber / Translator, (MEPL/Food Security Assessment)

In August 2021, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Mission to Lebanon (USAID/Lebanon) awarded EnCompass LLC the five-year Monitoring and Evaluation Program for Lebanon (MEPL) Activity. The purpose of this Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) contract is to supplement the monitoring and program-management efforts of USAID/Lebanon’s staff and to verify, monitor, and support USAID’s program performance in the country. The primary goal of MEPL’s contract is to improve performance management at all levels to help the Mission meet Agency requirements, make better-informed strategic and management decisions, and advance USAID learning on practical development approaches.

Position Description

EnCompass LLC is seeking a proficient English and Arabic Translator and transcriber to provide transcription and audio translation support to the Food Security Assessment (FSA) that will be conducted by the USAID Monitoring and Evaluation Program for Lebanon (MEPL). The position is needed from mid-March to around 30-April 2024. We are looking for someone who has excellent listening and typing skills, has the ability to meet tight deadlines, is highly organized and proactive, and is interested in international development, including the technical areas of agriculture and food security.

The position is based in Lebanon. The Translator will be expected to work remotely or at MEPL’s offices in Zalka, Lebanon, as needed. The expected LOE is 22 - 24 days.

Must be legally authorized to work in Lebanon for any employer without sponsorship.

 Position Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions:

• Accurately and efficiently transcribing and translating audio files from Arabic to English, verbatim. These include interviews and consultation workshops conducted in Arabic.
• Accurately and efficiently transcribing audio files of interviews and consultation workshops conducted in English, verbatim.
•  for accuracy and clarity, including researching and verifying names, terms, and other information as needed. A glossary of main terms can be provided by the assessment team.
• Adjusting transcribed/translated text based on the feedback of MEPL’s assessment team provided by email or in person.
• Other duties as assigned.

Academic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in translation, languages, or related field.

Experience and Skills

• Minimum of five years’ experience in English and Arabic translation. Knowledge of technical terminology is a must, especially as relates to agriculture and food security.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in transcribing and translating audio files in both English and Arabic.
• Previous experience working with international development projects is a plus.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in managing/supervising a team of more than two translators.
