Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Consultant

 

Project Title: Dealing with the Past - Reconciliation of the Memory of War

 

Position: MHPSS Consultant

Sector: Peacebuilding - Women Peace and Security

Funded by: UN Women

Location: Lebanon- 6 Locations to be determined

 

Level of effort:

  • 35 days (Intermittent) over a period of 23 months

 

  1. Background:

 

The "Dealing with the Past and Reconciliation of the Memory of the Lebanese Civil War" project is a groundbreaking initiative led by women and funded by the United Nations Women (UNW) under the Women, Peace and Security agenda. This project acknowledges the crucial role that women play in promoting sustainable peace, acknowledging their unique perspectives and contributions in post-conflict settings. As part of this project, we recognize the importance of providing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to women participants, acknowledging the unique psychological aspects associated with war memory. The MHPSS Consultant will play a crucial role in accompanying women in the project and conducting focused group discussions (FGDs) to explore their experiences and memories of war.

  1. Project Overview:

 

The project aims to address the complex legacy of the Lebanese Civil War, fostering a comprehensive understanding of historical events and promoting reconciliation among communities affected by the conflict. Through a gender-sensitive lens, the project seeks to empower women as key agents of change in the peacebuilding process.

 

  1. Duties and Responsibilities:

 

    1. Accompaniment of Women Participants:

 

Provide individualized MHPSS support to women participants involved in the project, recognizing the potential psychological challenges related to war memory.

Create a safe and confidential space for women to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns regarding their war experiences.

Collaborate with the project team to identify and address specific mental health needs of women participants.

    1. Conduct Focused Group Discussions (FGDs):

 

Develop a comprehensive plan for conducting FGDs with women participants, ensuring sensitivity to cultural nuances and psychological aspects.

Facilitate FGDs to explore women's memories of war, understanding the psychological impact and coping mechanisms employed.

Analyze and synthesize findings from FGDs to contribute insights for the broader project goals and strategies.

    1. Psychological Support Program:

 

Design and implement a targeted psychological support program for women participants based on the outcomes of FGDs.

Collaborate with local mental health resources, if available, to enhance the effectiveness of the support program.

Provide recommendations for integrating mental health considerations into the overall project framework.

  1. Qualifications and Skills:

 

Advanced degree in psychology, social work, or a related field.

Extensive experience in providing mental health and psychosocial support, particularly in post-conflict settings.

Strong facilitation skills for conducting FGDs and sensitivity to cultural and gender-specific considerations.

Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and best practices in MHPSS.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 

  1. Reporting:

 

The MHPSS Consultant will report directly to Project Manager.
