• Right to Play in Lebanon is seeking a Gender consultant to work on a research study that focuses on developing play-based participatory tools to build evidence on gender-based violence in conflict and refugee settings.

     

    Tasks include:

  1. Support global consultants in developing research plan, and GBV play-based participatory tools,
  2. Support in pre-testing, contextualizing, and validating the data collection tools (field work),
  3. Support in collecting data on GBV, using the participatory tools from youth in target communities (field work),
  4. Consolidate and analyse data collected, and submit narrative reports,
  5. Share findings and reflections with the leading global team,
  6. Provide training for RTP Lebanon country staff on gender issues, and gender responsive projects,
  7. Conduct GBV awareness sessions for youth and parents in target communities,
  8. Support in referring identified cases facing GBV to relevant organizations, using RTP referral mechanism.

  • Background on the organization and the project

Right to Play (RTP) is a global organization committed to improving the lives of children and youth affected by conflict, disease, and poverty. Established in 2000, Right to Play has pioneered unique play-based approach to learning and development which focuses on quality education, life skills, health, gender equality, child protection and building peaceful communities.

 

“Building GBV Evidence in Conflict and Refugee Settings” is a 3-year research project (2021 – 2023), implemented in vulnerable communities in Lebanon and Uganda. One global RTP team, is leading the full project, and 2 RTP country office teams in Lebanon and Uganda are implementing it with the support of local consultants. In Lebanon, the study will be implemented in Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut, South and North of Lebanon, in which existing projects with the same beneficiaries are going in parallel. The study includes 3 phases:

 

  • Phase 1 – May 2021 to July 2021: Community stakeholder workshops,
  • Phase 2 – December 2021 to August 2022: Developing, pre-testing, validating GBV play-based participatory tools,
  • Phase 3 – September 2022 to August 2023: Piloting the tools, collecting data related to GBV, analysing data, and sharing findings on the tools with the global RTP teams.

Study Objectives

  • This study aims at evaluating the impact of gender-responsive-play-based programming in relation to harmful gender norms among adolescents in refugee and host populations in Lebanon and Uganda.

Methodology and scope

  • A qualitative methodology study is envisioned, whereby developed tools are play-based participatory tools, to be used with beneficiaries during play sessions.

     

    Sample size for phase 2: 9 groups of youth (10-15 youth each)

    Sample size for phase 3: 4 groups of youth for piloting the tools, and 10 GBV awareness sessions with youth and parents in targeted communities.

     

    Anticipated number of working days for the consultancy is 30 to 40 days.

 

  1. Qualifications of the consultant

 

A consultant is needed with the following competencies and experience:

  • Previous experience in development of programs relating to gender issues,
  • Previous experience in training on gender related topics,
  • Proven knowledge and experience in applying participatory research methods and tools,
  • Degree in relevant field (e.g., Social Sciences, Gender Studies, or related technical field),
  • Strong facilitation skills, particularly with regards to working with vulnerable groups and youth,
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of principles of equity, participation, and inclusion,
  • Good writing skills,
  • Fluent spoken and written English and Arabic.
