Project Officer - Agriculture

1. Background and objectives of the project

In collaboration with Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation, the SAUFF (Sustainable agriculture supplying urban farmers market for increased food security) project aims to increase food sovereignty in Lebanon through working with smallholder farmers supporting them to shift into sustainable agriculture and linking them with urban point of sales.

• Outcome 1: Smallholders adopt and practice sustainable agricultural practices.
• Outcome 2: Service providers provide responsive and quality inputs.
• Outcome 3: Beirut-based food insecure communities benefit from urban points of sale supplied by smallholder farmers practicing sustainable production methods

Jibal is looking for a project field officer with background in sustainable agriculture to undertake the responsibilities of outcomes 1 and 2 stated above, and contribute to the overall implementation of the project.

2. Scope of work

The scope of work includes the following tasks that will be conducted in close collaboration with the Project Manager.

• Actively contribute and work within all Jibal’s projects related to agriculture, food, food sovereignty and security
• Continue with the selected farmers and agricultural input suppliers
• Develop of a set of best practices based on a needs’ assessment of famers and suppliers
• Organize training and coaching sessions, and coaching group of famers
• Coordinate visits to service providers and key farmers
• Follow-up on school farms assessment and cooperative assessment
• Gather coaches’ recommendations, write further recommendations and reports based on own analysis
• Support implementation of recommendations resulted from the assessment of input providers
• Ensure implementation of project deliverables according to the yearly plan of operation and in line with partnership agreement
• Report on projects' deliverables
• Contribute to market access for farmers

Participation to Jibal life:

• Closely interact and coordinate with the Jibal team
• Support team member on different aspects, specifically on work related to the food sovereignty programme

3. Qualifications of candidate

• Five years of experience in sustainable agriculture, agroecology, sustainable food systems.
• Excellent experience in training and coaching farmers in the field.
• Good experience in conducting assessments, interviews, writing reports, etc.
• Knowledgeable about food sovereignty.
• Good organization and coordination skills.
• Fluent Arabic and English speaking and writing skills, French is a plus.
