Training on WHO guidelines for NCD management
In line with the international community response to the Syrian Crisis, HelpAge International is providing support to Syrian refugees in the Middle East region including Lebanon. To date, HelpAge work in Lebanon has focused on health, psychosocial support, and inclusion of older people into the humanitarian response. Starting 2016, HelpAge is implementing a project funded by the German Government in Lebanon in partnership with Amel International, Makassed Foundation, Imam Sadr Foundation and Young Mens’ Christian Association. The project aims to improve the standard and availability of non-communicable disease (NCD) care received by older Syrian refugees and other older people in the host communities in Lebanon. It focuses on prevention, screening and treatment of two major CVD risk factors: hypertension and type II diabetes (T2D). A number of activities are conducted to attain the project objectives including capacity building of health staff, community workers and volunteers.
HelpAge International intends to conduct 3 days online workshop (3-hours per day) on WHO guidelines (management of Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus) for health staff (General practitioners and Nurses) involved in the implementation of the project activities and other actors. The 3 days should take place in April 2021.
This TOR describes consultant’s roles and objectives of the workshop:
Objectives
At the end of the training, it is expected that:
1. General Practitioners have a clear understanding about management of patients with diabetes and hypertension as per national/WHO guidelines as well as management/detection of people with high risk for developing the diseases. This includes having necessary information and the know how to conduct comprehensive patient assessment/interrogatory, clinical examination, diagnosis, prescription of appropriate medication and necessary laboratory tests, follow up and referral to specialist if needed.
2. Nurses have clear understanding about nursing care related to screening and management of hypertension and diabetes including performing screening tests and measurements, classification of people as per tests results, keeping record of indicators, patient education and follow up.
3. All trainees know about the special considerations in patient care for older people affected by diabetes and hypertension.
4. All trainees should have basic information about COVID19 and its impact on older people and people with NCDs in addition to vaccine importance.
Methods
The consultant/trainer will be required to work with HelpAge team to successfully deliver the training. He/she is expected to be able to energetically conduct the training sessions using multiple methods such as power point presentation, case studies, interactive exercises, group work, role play, etc…The training will be conducted over 3 days such as one day training for general practitioners, one day training for nurses of HelpAge partners, and one day for other healthcare workers from different NGOs.
HelpAge team will be responsible for managing all administrative aspects and logistics of the workshop (sending invitations, ensuring venue/ audio-visual equipment and beverages, printing of hand outs and educational material, registration of participants, provision of attendance certificate)
Key Deliverables
- Material for three days interactive workshop. Consultant should share agenda and training material for the workshop one week before the event to allow time to review and incorporate feedback timely. References are needed for all the information included in the training sessions
- Hand-outs/ presentation, educational material used in the training sessions
- Pre and post-test questionnaire (English and/or Arabic)
- Training report with analysis of pre-post-test questionnaire, signed attendance sheet, photos of the training, evaluation of the training and general observation about the training impact
Required skills and competencies
-Medical doctor, PHD or Doctorate degree
-Have previous experience in conducting trainings
-Have technical knowledge and expertise to conduct training on non-communicable diseases.
-Excellent communication and writing skills
-Fluency in English and Arabic both written and spoken
