SMEX seeks a legal advisor with an interest in digital rights-related issues to launch and lead our Legal Unit. The Legal Unit will support our technical and advocacy teams in affecting more sustainable changes to the digital landscape, by bolstering our authority to address the frequent violations of data security, digital privacy and freedom of expression in Lebanon and the region. As the head of our Legal Unit, you will provide legal support for device seizure cases and other privacy and freedom of expression violations reported to SMEX.

SMEX, the Arab region’s leading digital rights research, training, and advocacy organization, is conducting research on the roll-out of digital ID systems in Arabic-speaking countries. The ideal candidate will come with exceptional technical skills and lots of ideas for how to use audiovisual media on a variety of platforms to tell compelling, informative stories about people and society in the digital age. You will produce campaign videos, explainers on digital rights issues, how-to videos and screencasts with the latest digital safety tips, and podcasts, as well as help generate infographics, GIFs, and other media. In addition, the multimedia producer will manage the audiovisual production of SMEX’s live events, including Facebook Live sessions, public discussions, workshops, and conferences.

As the digital content producer, you will work closely with SMEX principals and partners to create exceptional, accessible, shareable content for a diverse range of audiences in Arabic and English. This is an early-career position.

SMEX is recruiting a full-time digital rights campaigner to promote new digital rights research and expand support for digital rights across the Middle East and North Africa region through measurable, evidence-based digital rights advocacy campaigns.

In addition to having a passion for protecting human rights online, the ideal candidate/s should follow the latest issues and dilemmas in technology, such as tensions between freedom of expression and hate speech and sexual harassment online; data protection, privacy, and biometrics; surveillance, and smart cities; as well as other issues such as net neutrality and access to information.
