Gender Statistics in Lebanon: Current Situation and Future Needs

The Central Administration of Statistics (CAS) and the World Bank organized a workshop entitled "Gender Statistics in Lebanon: Current Situation and Future Needs," which took place on June 17, 2010. Presentations during the workshop focused on the role of gender statistics in health, reproductive health, education, women's empowerment and influence and economic participation. This resource includes five presentations of studies regarding issues pertaining to gender equity in Lebanon. The first presentation, prepared by Maral Tutelian, reviews the situation of women in Lebanon using statistical data from a number of surveys completed by CAS. The second presentation, prepared by Monica Fong, covers the definition of gender statistics, their use and the need for such findings. The third presentation, prepared by Ibtissam El Jouni and Monica Fong, summarizes major issues on gender-related aspects of education in Lebanon, identifies areas for greater attention to gender in the collection, tabulation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data. The fourth source, also presented by Ibtissam El Jouni and Monica Fong, summarizes major issues on gender-related aspects of health in Lebanon. The fifth and final presentation, prepared by Monica Fong, lists indicators reflecting women’s changing responsibilities in society, political participation, participation at higher administrative levels and participation in economic decision making.
