Community Midwife

A Registered Midwife (RMW) is recognized as a responsible and accountable healthcare professional who works in partnership with women to provide them with personalized and respectful sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care.  The licensed midwife provides health care and education to women and carries out necessary tasks and activities to maintain maternal and child health. This includes family planning, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, follow-up on Ante Natal care (ANC) and Post Natal care (PNC) visits, breastfeeding, and newborn care, consistent with the laws and regulations governing the midwifery profession in Lebanon and globally.

1.Duties and Responsibilities

Provide counseling to beneficiaries to educate and empower them, contributing to their overall sexual and reproductive health improvement.

Raise awareness and provide education on all aspects of reproductive health and available services. Contribute to content development by helping create educational materials that effectively enhance community knowledge and understanding of reproductive health topics.

Promote the effective use of safe and effective family planning methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies and reduce the need for abortions.

Monitor and follow up with pregnant women on their visits to the Primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs).

Guide mothers on breastfeeding practices and newborn care.

Advise on the importance of completing vaccinations for newborns.

Provide home visits as needed.

Collaborate closely with Outreach Volunteers (OVs) to effectively address the specific needs of community members.

Take and document vital signs of service users, including blood pressure, temperature, and pulse.

2.Planning and Implementing Health Education Awareness

Plan, implement, and evaluate awareness group sessions in safe spaces, and community centers targeting women, couples, adolescents, children, and other influential community members.

Provide integrated counseling on sexual and reproductive health topics such as premarital, preconception, pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding, family planning, infant and young child feeding (IYCF), and sexual and gynecological health.

Deliver comprehensive, adapted, and person-centered antenatal, postnatal, and neonatal care.

Promote primary care by encouraging the beneficiaries to regularly visit primary health care centers to benefit from available preventive and curative care.

3.Documentation and Referral:

Maintain accurate and complete documentation of beneficiary interactions, including counseling sessions.

Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling and education programs, using feedback and observed outcomes to recommend improvements (e.g., pre-and post-tests).

Identify cases requiring specialist care or advanced medical interventions and make appropriate referrals to specialized health care providers.

Ensure all referral processes are well-documented, including details of the referred case, the reason for referral, and follow-up actions.

Follow up on referred cases to ensure beneficiaries have received necessary care and provide additional support as needed.

Report on issues that may impact the flow and quality of work and services and suggest solutions.

4.Adherence to Regulations:

Adhere to work hours according to center policy.

Maintain proper conduct, effective positive communication, and handle work pressure constructively.

Remain calm and composed under pressure.

Attend staff meetings regularly.

Avoid discussing personal matters and problems in front of beneficiaries and always maintain confidentiality

Build and maintain trust with beneficiaries.

Communicate and collaborate effectively with all staff to ensure positive interactive synergy for the benefit of beneficiaries.

Establish and maintain good relationships and regular communication with professional colleagues in nearby health centers, social services, and hospitals.

Ensure compliance with policies and procedures, promote patient-centered care, and contribute to improving performance and service quality.

5.Self Performance Development:

Attend educational and training sessions as invited, including continuing medical education programs, communication skills development courses, and computer skills development courses.

Participate in regular meetings with management and staff (including social workers and other relevant personnel) to enhance the implementation of services and strategies.

Qualifications and Skills Required

• Education: Degree in Midwifery; valid license to practice as a midwife.
• Experience: Proven experience in a midwifery role; experience in community health and education is an asset.
