Location: Beirut

Job Overview

Megaphone is seeking to hire a video journalist who will be in charge of filming and editing videos on a weekly basis. The video journalist will edit or film different forms of videos such as interviews, explainer videos, short news reports, coverage of main events on the ground, investigations, etc. The video journalist will be primarily working on stories selected collectively during the weekly editorial meeting, during which they are encouraged to pitch stories to work on. The video journalist will be working closely with a team of journalists, scriptwriters, editors, and designers. In addition, it is expected for the video journalist to remain informed about the latest trends and developments on social media platforms and digital journalism, and take part in brainstorming and research and development exercises to enhance Megaphone’s formats and content. Our collaborative work culture relies on the willingness of all team members to be open and inclusive in their methodology.  Occasionally, the video journalist may be asked to lead the production of special projects (documentaries, co-productions, etc.). Given the unpredictable nature  of our work, the video journalist is expected to be on call to cover urgent events if needed during the weekend (time off in-lieu days will be granted). 

The video journalist will be reporting directly to the editor-in-chief and the creative director. 

Role and Responsibilities

• Edit videos that include found footage, shot footage, and animated graphics
• Cover events on the ground
• Conduct and film interviews
• Occasionally provide necessary assets for videos (visuals, soundtracks, etc.)
• Participate in the conceptualization and storyboarding of videos 
• Partake in brainstorming and experimenting with new formats
• Coordinate internally with fellow team members
• Archive and file own footage
• Lead on production of special projects
• Coordinate with archiving and grants team for reporting purposes
• Contribute to daily and weekly brainstorming sessions
• Contribute to developing new formats

Required Qualifications

• Background in journalism, media studies, cinema, and film-making.
• Experience in filming and video editing
• Good knowledge of motion graphics animation
• Comfortable with in-house VO recording, sound editing, and mixing
• Good knowledge and understanding of local politics
• Fluent in Arabic and English
• Proficient in editing on Adobe Premiere Pro and working knowledge of After Effects 
• Comfortable with teamwork and experienced in working under pressure to meet tight deadlines
• Proactive with initiatives
• Open to working collaboratively

Additional Qualifications

• 2 to 3 years of experience in the media industry is highly desirable 
• Knowledge of French or other relevant languages is a plus
