Basketball Coach (6 Positions)

Project summary:

Sport and cultural activities have always been of great importance for individuals, communities, and nations. In the last decades, it has been proven that such activities played a major role in contributing to stronger social bonds and solidarity. It played a major role in bringing people together despite their differences.

Al Midan NGO in partnership with the Local Development Program for Urban Areas in North Lebanon (UDP-NL) has implemented a successful project called Sport Builds Generations in 2020-2022, that capacitated coaches to deliver trainings that taught social-emotional skills through football trainings, events, and tournaments.

The need for such initiatives proved a great success, but considering very few organizations considering these initiatives, the need is still valid and required to achieve advanced results.

Therefore, the aim of this current project: "Activation of Public Spaces and Strengthening of Organizations that Manage Them'' is to help bring several public sites in north Lebanon, that were and are still being rehabilitated and constructed by GIZ under the UDP-NL project to life through a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach with a focus on sustainability. We aim to work closely with the organizations (NGOs, sports clubs, and municipalities) on creating and establishing new activities (basketball, ultimate frisbee, chess club, etc) and events for these spaces. More importantly, this intervention will work closely with the organizations to develop and strengthen their capacities within their organization, which will include technical workshops (marketing and branding, facility management, etc) as well as close mentorship.

Job responsibilities:

• Will be conducting weekly Basketball training and instill and teach life skills.
• Monitoring the players’ attendance and attending tournaments and events.
• Support in the outreach of players within the targeted area.
• Maintain proper filing for all field documents and attendance sheets.
• Send the attendance sheets weekly and report monthly on activities and results.
• Attend and participate in the First Aid workshops.
• Attend and participate in training/activities provided by Al Midan such as tournaments.
• Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all players, and report any abuse, discrimination, and sexualized violence.
• Support Al-Midan staff in executing the needs assessments and youth-led initiatives.
• Coordinate with the activation officer to properly document activities.
• Develop a weekly plan under the supervision of the Activation officer.
• Provide the Activation officer with all the needed documents related to the training sessions.
• Coordinate field visits in coordination with the activation officer.
• Ensure that all activities are gender-sensitive and follow AL MIDAN Gender Equity Policy and code of conduct.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required by your direct supervisor.
• Understanding the game and the rules, devising play strategies, developing ideas to optimize performance, providing mentorship and teaching players the rules of the game.

Al midan team members are expected  to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitiring and evaluation of our field projects.

Requirements:

• Have previous experience in Basketball coaching/mentoring/working with kids and youth.
• Have a minimum of a high school degree.
• Bachelor in Physical Education is a plus.
• Basketball Diploma/ certificate is a plus.
• Sport For Development certificate is a plus.
• Are available to coach at least once a week (2.5 hours: 90-minute training, 30 minutes before and after).
• Having experience in engaging with a scout or local club is a plus.
• Fluency in Arabic and English is a plus
• Enjoy working with children and youth.
• Have a willingness to commit to the project.
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Must be in top physical condition and able to motivate players.
• Good leadership, communication, and teamworking skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Have excellent memory and concentration skills.
• Proven track record in coaching organizations and business leaders.
• Willing to participate in induction training before the start of the program.
