Migrant domestic workers camping outside their embassies

Dozens of Ethiopian domestic workers have been abandoned by their employers, without remunerations, or passports. These migrant workers have been camping outside the Ethiopian Consulate for several days, demanding protection and their repatriation, as most of them are unable to afford costly flight return tickets.

Yet, so far neither the embassies nor the Lebanese State have been able to ensure their repatriation or even access to housing and protection after they have lost their jobs. Indeed, under the Kafala (sponsorship) system migrant workers are deprived of their most basic rights, which leaves them vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and precarity. 

What types of action can be taken by civil society to protect Migrant Domestic workers?

تخلى أصحاب العمل عن عشرات من عاملات المنازل الأثيوبيات من دون تسديد رواتبهن أو إعادة جوازات سفرهن.
وتعتصم العاملات  منذ عدة أيام خارج القنصلية الإثيوبية، وتطالب بالحماية والعودة إلى بلادهن، حيث أن معظمهن غير قادرات على تحمل تكاليف السفر للعودة.

ومع ذلك، لم تتمكن السفارات أو الدولة اللبنانية بتأمين حماية أو عودة العمال المهاجرين إلى بلادهم. ان نظام الكفالة يحرم العمال المهاجرين من حقوقهم الأساسية، مما يجعلهم عرضة للإساءة والاستغلال والهشاشة. 

ما هي الإجراءات التي يمكن أن تتخذها الجهات الفاعلة في المجتمع المدني لحماية عاملات المنازل المهاجرات؟
