Reporting on Gender Based Violence with Emphasis on Sexual Trafficking Project

The May Chidiac Foundation-Media Institute (MCFMI) is launching a new project entitled “Reporting on Gender Based Violence with emphasis on Sexual Trafficking” in partnership with UN Women.

Issues of Child Marriage, domestic violence, marital rape, and sexual trafficking continue to plague Lebanese girls as young as 14 years old. The influx of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has also increased cases of sexual trafficking cases on Lebanese territories by 500% from 2015 till 2016 according to the Euro-Mediterranean Women’s Foundation in collaboration with the League for Lebanese Women’s Rights (LLWR).

The project will focus on theoretical and practical sessions to better the media coverage of Gender Based Violence issues, most importantly cases of sexual trafficking and exploitation which will better the reporting of journalists on such specialized yet sensitive issues while equally pushing for change of trafficking policies through an online campaign.

This project will cover the following:

-         Training on Concepts and terminologies regarding Gender Based Violence in general

-         Training on Concepts and terminologies with emphasis on sexual Trafficking in Lebanon & the region.

-         Lebanese Trafficking Legislations

-         Traditional media and social media campaigning and planning skills with emphasis on Trafficking campaign,

-         Interviewing techniques using a survivor-centered approach and trauma awareness.

-         Intensive Investigative Journalism training (General with emphasis on Trafficking)

-         How to Deal with Violence when reporting on the ground (especially when following stories related to sexual trafficking).

At the end of the project, beneficiaries will come-up with a well-organized social media campaign to spread awareness about the safety of journalists. Social media reaches audiences in a cost-efficient, impactful, and effective way. The campaign might include quotes, tips, pictures, videos, and/or testimonials. The beneficiaries will create the content themselves.

This project is free of charge. The sessions will be held on Saturdays mainly or would be altered upon the beneficiaries’ request. Also, by the end of this project, the participants will be handed certificate in a small ceremony.
