Call for Participants: Strengthening Your Reporting Skills on Gender Based Violence Issues

Are you passionate about covering gender related social issues?

UNESCO Beirut office and May Chidiac Foundation – Media Institute (MCFMI) is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for young media professionals in reporting gender-based violence (GBV) using an innovative survivor-based approach.
Apply and learn effective coverage methods to beat the persistent GBV phenomenon!

Trainers:

-Dr. Dima Dabbous, Dr. Dima Dabbous, assistant professor of media and gender studies at LAU, is the UNESCO lead researcher and senior consultant on media in the Arab World.

-Me. Iqbal Dougham, Attorney at Law, President of the Family Rights Network in Lebanon, President of the Working Women League in Lebanon, Legal consultant for the Arab Women Union.

-Me. Melkar Khoury, Attoney at Law, Legal Research and Political Analyst, as well as Expert in the fields of democracy, human rights education and Lebanese Citizenship.

-Ms. Diana Moukalled, Web Editor at the Lebanon-based Future Television and was the Production & Programming Manager with at the channel

-Ms. Marie Adele Salem, MHPSS Adviser at the ABAAD Resource Center for Gender Equality.

Topics to be covered

Gender and GBV awareness training on concepts and terminologies and portrayal in the media Using a Survivor-Centered Approach Strategies for Covering GBV Dealing with GBV legislation Interviewing Techniques and Trauma Awareness How to safely navigate sexual aggression to avoid being targeted
The training will be done by specialize trainers who have in-depth knowledge and extensive experience in gender related issues.

Project Objectives:

The project aims at:

- Enhance trainees’ knowledge on the human rights violations and unethical coverage of GBV in Lebanon.

- Equip media practitioners with the proper tools to not only communicate the survivors’ stories for emotional impact, but to also inspire action from the public and institutions.

- Encourage stories that garner greater support and services for GBV survivors

Our Target

The primary beneficiaries of this project are 14 TV, print and online media professionals (men and women) from various institutions in Lebanon. Participants will be selected based on a presented portfolio of reports and audiovisual projects to be considered for acceptance into the program.

Dates:

The training program will start at the end of October. The exact date will be announced soon. It will be offered in Arabic and English.

The program will consist of six training topics with a couple of hours of sessions and will be given over a period of two months.

In the third and final month of the project, the trainees will be required to write articles or implement audio-visual projects under the supervision of the project advisor on a GBV related topic.

After the pieces are finalized, a ceremony will be held and certificates from MCF-UNESCO will be handed to the participants.

Training Fees:

The training will be offered for free.
