Trajectories Of Young Arab And European Islamists: The Inevitable Jihadist Radicalisation?

The French Institute for the Near East (IFPO) and Lebanon Support
Cordially invite you to a talk on:
Trajectories of young Arab and European Islamists: the inevitable jihadist radicalisation?
By:
Mr Mohamed-Ali Adraoui
is a political and social scientist working on contemporary International Relations, the Islamic World, Political Islam and Salafist currents. He completed his PhD in Sciences Po Paris in November 2011. His dissertation, “Beyond Discourse, Salafism in France, Socialization or Rupture of a Social Phenomenon?”, is an analysis of the emergence of a new face of Islam in France, aiming at examining the factors why this Islamic current has globalised and met success within French society. It has been published in 2013 under the title From the Gulf to the French Banlieues. Globalized Salafism.
The talk will tackle the issue of the “Jihadi phenomenon” which is nowadays at the centre of discourses by media, national and international political institutions, security experts, researchers, and ordinary citizens. Yet, this increasing focus on the issue rarely relies on reliable studies and research and is inversely proportional to actual knowledge of the subject, hence the widespread preconceived ideas, prejudice and clichés, that are, most of the time, fed by fear. This talk proposes a sociological analysis of radical salafism and jihadism in Europe and the Arab world based on in-depth fieldwork investigations and observations.
The event will be held in English.
Date: Tuesday, 28th of April 2015, at 6:00pm
Location: Lebanon Support’s office (Adlieh, Najib Azouri st, Shaghouri bldg, 3rd floor - follow this link for the map)
