Bordering The Middle East: Concepts And Challenges

Lebanon Support
Cordially invites you to a talk on:
Bordering the Middle East: concepts and challenges
By:Daniel Meier, political scientist. He is a research fellow at CNRS, Grenoble, affiliated with the Euborderscapes programme. A former Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College in Oxford, he also taught at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. His publications focus on Lebanese-Palestinian relationships, border issues, and politics in the Middle East. His forthcoming book is titled Shaping Lebanon’s Borderlands: Armed Resistance and International Intervention in South Lebanon (IB Tauris).

The current turmoils in the Middle East affecting its borders and sharpening communal boundaries raise the question of the permanence of traditional nation-state borders. In order to assess this issue in the region, this talk intends to provide a few concepts and analytical tools in order to show the interest of understanding “border” as a process linked to social and political processes. This conception of borders allows us to assess the types of dynamics observable at states’ frontiers in the Middle East, thus raising questions of states’ sovereignty and legitimacy.

The Talk will be held in English, with possibility of discussion in Arabic.Date: Thursday, 4th of June 2015, at 6:00pmLocation: Lebanon Support’s office (Adlieh, Najib Azouri st, Shaghouri bldg, 3rd floor - follow this link for the map)For further information and confirmation of attendance, contact us on: [email protected]
