Since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, Lebanon has been straining to cope with the huge influx of refugees. High vulnerability levels, low assistance coverage, and increased prices of necessary items have hurt the coping mechanisms of refugees who are also facing increasing exploitation, debt, and depletion of assets to compensate for the lack of unmet needs.

Lebanon faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, compounded by economic collapse, the aftermaths of the Beirut Port explosion, the protracted Syrian refugee crisis, rising political tensions, and the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing 82% of the population into multidimensional poverty (ESCWA, 2021). There is a continued need for lifesaving assistance for over 1.5 million Syrian refugees (Government of Lebanon, 2020) and 3 million vulnerable Lebanese (ERP 2021) currently living in a failing state, generating significant needs for assistance across multiple sectors.

More than 11 years after the conflict in Syria began, Lebanon continues to face one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time. The Lebanese government estimates that the country hosts 1.5 of the 6.6 million people of Syrian nationality who have fled the conflict since 2011 (including 831,053 registered with UNHCR by 30 June 2022). The country also welcomes 34,000 Palestinian refugees from Syria (PRS), 35,000 Lebanese returnees from Syria and a pre-existing population of over 270,000 Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, which makes it the country in the world with the largest number of refugees

Lebanon is host to an estimated 1.5 million Syrians who have fled the conflict in Syria since 2011, including 844,056 registered as refugees with UNHCR (UNOCHA, 2021). The protracted displacement, the severe economic crisis that has become apparent in October 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the explosion at the Port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, have pushed 82% of the population into multidimensional poverty (ESCWA, 2021), generating significant needs for assistance across multiple sectors.
