Terms of Reference

Forestry Coordinator
 
 
1- Responsabilities:
The Forestry Coordinator is included in APJM’s work division Conservation Program, and therefore cooperating closely with the person in the position of the Conservation Manager to whom he/she reports. The main responsibilities include tasks on a regular daily basis, and such related to upcoming projects related to conservation, rehabilitation/reforestation and use of forest land within the Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve. The responsibilities can be summarized as follows:
 
 
1- Native tree nursery production
-Ensure proper and sufficient maintenance at the tree nursery’s three different locations, and take appropriate actions where and whenever needed (e.g. pest control, or technical problems with installation)
-Monitor and record growing process, irrigation schedule, and report on regular basis; quality control
-Maintain a friendly relationship with local landowners (nurseries are set up on rented land, water and electricity are provided by landowners)
-Coordinate and follow up with persons responsible for irrigation
-Purchases of needed materials/equipment (components for growing substrate, growing containers, spare parts for irrigation system)
-Plan and coordinate upcoming seasonal tasks related to preparation of nursery land and seedling production:
i. Seed collection (summer-fall)
ii. Seed processing and treatment (fall-spring)
iii. Nursery preparation and sowing (spring-summer)
iv. Maintenance (summer-fall)
v. Sales and delivery (fall-winter)
-Coordinate and communicate with APJM accountant concerning financial issues
-Continuously follow up with previous and potential buyers of seedlings, and follow up on reforestation projects in need of seedlings
- Follow up and communicate with Native Nursery Coop and other partners, e.g. Ministry of Agriculture, Lebanon Reforestation Initiative etc.
-Research on available methods and materials, and take advantage of opportunities to increase knowledge and skills related to nursery production and management
-Develop germination protocols for plant species of particular economical and ecological value
-Develop production system of medicinal, edible and aromatic plant species in APJM native nursery
 
 
 
2- Project development
 
-Drafting project proposals for suitable funding opportunities
 
-Seek and keep contact to relevant contact persons and coordinate on project development
 
-Field visits required for project development
 
 
 
3- Project coordination
 
 In general:
 
-Coordinate upcoming/existing projects’ activities
 
-Serving as contact person for contractual stakeholders (including meetings etc.)
 
-Reporting on project process
 
-Specific project(s): TJ Saade Forest project
 
-Follow up on maintenance of rehabilitation site (irrigation/weed control)
 
-Assure proper operation of irrigation system including regular refilling of irrigation tanks
 
-Follow up on protection of site
 
-Monitor seedling survival on site
 
-Where necessary, replant seedlings
 
4- Other
 
-Assist and work in a team with other APJM staff on related projects (e.g. agricultural activities)
Qualifications and requirements:
The position is a junioror senior position.  Preference will be given to holders of degrees in the Forestry / Biodiversity field and to a lesser extent in the Agricultural field. Knowledge of native trees and/or nursery practices is a plus; previous experience in native tree nurseries is highly recommended. Strong commitment and interest in applied practices and in objectives behind the program are essential personal qualities. Discipline in performing given tasks properly is expected. The candidate should be open-minded to unconventional practices.
The position is not restricted to tasks like supervising, organizing, and monitoring. Own initiative in participating in work tasks that include manual labor is expected.
Driver’s permit is mandatory. The candidate has to be able to reach nursery independently. Pickup truck (manual transmission) is available for transport of materials.
 
 
Supervisory role: To be determined depending on project's structure
 
Duty Station:
 
The Forestry Coordinator’s responsibilities require to dedicate at least 50% of the working hours in the field depending on upcoming tasks and their urgency.
Office: APJM – Jounieh
Field: JM Biosphere Reserve- Ftouh Keserwan; Native tree nurseries (Mchati, Qehmez, Yahchoush villages); driving license required.
Working hours: 9am to 5pm, weekly staff meeting for 2 hours. Working hours may vary depending on tasks; overtime and occasional work on week-ends required.
