Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Technology Researcher to explore the complex landscape of spyware development, funding, and deployment, with a particular focus on its impact in the Global South. This role requires the submission of a research paper by the end of July 2025 uncovering the operations of spyware companies, analyzing their financial and governmental ties, and documenting cases of targeted surveillance. Your work will directly contribute to advocacy efforts aimed at increasing accountability, exposing abuses, and driving regulatory reforms to protect human rights in the digital age.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and analyze the operations, products, and strategies of major spyware companies operating in the Global South.
  • Collect and analyze data from primary sources (interviews, leaked documents, whistleblower accounts) and secondary sources (academic studies, investigative reports, legal filings).
  • Document cases of targeted surveillance against journalists, activists, and opposition leaders.
  • Evaluate existing legal frameworks and accountability mechanisms related to spyware use and identify gaps in regulation.
  • Collaborate with the Threat Lab team to develop advocacy strategies that highlight the financial, social, and human rights costs of spyware.
  • Contribute to internal and external research initiatives, including the development of reports, policy briefs, and public awareness campaigns.

Technical Skills:

  • Ease of use of the Linux environment, including the command line and Linux Bash scripting.
  • Understanding of Computer and Mobile OS, their functionalities and differences.
  • Ease of use and familiarity with the Python language.
  • Knowledge in API integration and functioning, in addition to Deployment of open source solutions and maintenance.
  • Capacity to analyze Network logs.
  • Experience with Git protocol.
  • Basic understanding of network protocols. 

 Research skills:

  • Expertise in analyzing diverse datasets, including confidential records, internet activity logs, and traces of surveillance software.
  • In-depth understanding of how malicious surveillance tools operate, their deployment methods, and techniques for detecting their presence.
  • Skilled in gathering intelligence from publicly available sources, such as industry reports, online forums, and specialized databases.
  • Proficient in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including conducting interviews, reviewing analytical reports, and designing surveys to assess impact.
  • Strong ability to assess source reliability, verify information, and identify disinformation or misleading data.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with SMEX's core work and a shared commitment to human rights values, including privacy, users’ rights, digital surveillance, data protection, freedom of expression, accessibility, and open culture.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Social Sciences, Development Studies, Statistics, Computer Science etc..).
  • Demonstrated experience in technology research, advocacy, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience in writing and publishing research reports, policy briefs, or academic papers on technology-related topics.
  • Knowledge of international human rights frameworks, digital rights principles, and global surveillance trends.
