The Math Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality mathematics education to students, fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, and ensuring adherence to LOST’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding policies. This role involves a commitment to the organization’s values and principles and collaboration with education staff to meet the diverse needs of students.

Key Responsibilities

Adherence to Policies

  • Familiarize yourself with and strictly follow LOST’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Ensure these policies are implemented effectively within the classroom setting.

Discipline and Conduct

  • Implement and maintain positive discipline practices in alignment with LOST’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Agreements.
  • Address behavioral issues in a constructive and supportive manner.

Commitment to Values

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of and commitment to LOST’s aims, values, and principles, including rights-based approaches to education.
  • Promote these values in all interactions with students and colleagues.

Teaching Environment

  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and learning.
  • Organize and manage classroom resources and materials effectively.

Curriculum Implementation

  • Implement the mathematics curriculum as directed by the Head of Mathematics Department and Education Coordinator.
  • Plan and deliver lessons that meet curriculum requirements and cater to students’ learning needs.

Student Well-being

  • Ensure that students feel safe, respected, and valued in the classroom.
  • Address any issues related to bullying, discrimination, or harassment promptly and appropriately.

Individualized Teaching

  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Provide additional support to students who require it to achieve their educational goals.

Progress Monitoring

  • Regularly assess and evaluate students’ progress through tests, assignments, and classroom observations.
  • Provide constructive feedback and support to help students improve their mathematical skills.

Non-Discriminatory Practices

  • Model and encourage non-discriminatory and inclusive practices in all aspects of teaching and interactions.
  • Promote respect and understanding among students.

Classroom Management

  • Ensure classrooms are tidy, well-organized, and conducive to learning.
  • Report any accidental damage or maintenance issues to the appropriate staff.

Diverse Learning Needs

  • Identify and understand various types of learners in the classroom.
  • Implement strategies to address different learning needs and ensure all students achieve competency.

Key Tasks

Lesson Planning and Delivery

  • Develop detailed lesson plans in accordance with the mathematics curriculum.
  • Deliver engaging and interactive lessons that promote student understanding and application of mathematical concepts.

Assessment and Reporting

  • Conduct regular assessments of student performance and progress in mathematics.
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievements and areas for improvement.
  • Prepare and submit progress reports as required.

Student Support

  • Provide individualized support and tutoring to students as needed.
  • Address student queries and concerns related to mathematics promptly and empathetically.

Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with the Head of Mathematics Department, Education Coordinator, and other staff members.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and other relevant activities.

Classroom Maintenance

  • Regularly check and maintain classroom equipment and materials.
  • Ensure the classroom environment is clean, organized, and conducive to learning.

Parent/Guardian Communication

  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress in mathematics.
  • Engage in parent-teacher meetings and provide updates on students’ achievements.

Qualifications and Experience

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field.

Professional Experience

Minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching mathematics or a related subject.

Experience with Youth

Demonstrated experience working with adolescents and/or youth in an educational setting.

Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to explain complex mathematical concepts in an accessible and engaging manner.

Certifications

Relevant teaching certifications are desirable.
