Expert needed for conducting Webinar “The economy of Poors”

Organization Background:

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is a private, non-profit-making, politically independent and non-denominational organization that supports people living in deprivation and poverty, irrespective of the color of their skin, their religious beliefs or their worldview. WHH is working in the fields of development cooperation and humanitarian aid, relief aid, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. In Lebanon, WHH implement projects through local implementing partners where agriculture, livelihoods, food security and social stability are the main working fields.

 

Request: WHH is looking for an expert in economics, humanities/sociology/any related academic field to deliver a webinar about the book “Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty” to the WHH team, WHH partners working with us and to the wider interested audience. The objective is to provide the audience with a wider understanding of what poverty means in Lebanon and how we can fight it taking into consideration lessons learned from other poor countries.

 

Tasks & Details:

 

  • To conduct a 90-minute webinar, including a presentation (using power-point or similar presentation tool) of the famous book by Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo, and to make a clear connection to the Lebanese context: What does poverty mean in Lebanon, who is poor in Lebanon and what are approaches to fight poverty in Lebanon how do the poor in Lebanon think about economy (Behavioral economy) , and to discuss the lessons of the book and its possible replicability with an interested audience online.
  • Suggested date: Between 27 & 31 March 2023
  • The webinar should present:
  • presentation about the main messages of the mentioned book
  • Approaches to fight poverty
  • How some approaches of fighting poverty turned out to be harmful
  • How poor think about the economy and how economy operates within poor communities
  • How micro interventions can have significant macro effect
  • Field examples about interventions that turned out to be harmful (Guiding Reference: work of Esther Duflo & Abhijit Banerjee)
  • Open discussions about its applicability in the lebanese context
  • Suggested structure (To be validated by expert): 60 min presentation & 30 min Q&A
  • Presentation should be delivered in Arabic language, if possible (or English), and the presentation slides can be either in Arabic or English
  • To provide a copy of the presentation to WHH in ppt or pdf format
  • Webinar will take place on MS Teams and the invitation of participants will be organized by the WHH team

 

Payment Terms: The expert is requested to submit a proposal with a financial offer covering the delivery of the TOR services by 24th March 2023.
