Background

Concern Worldwide is an Irish International NGO working in the world’s poorest countries. Under the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (BPRM) fund, Lebanon Branch of Concern Worldwide along with ESDU-AUB are implementing a two years project in Akkar and T5 entitled “Value chains for improved socioeconomic well-being of Syrian refugees and Lebanese host communities”. 

The Project intends to provide capacity building on topics related to good agricultural practices for vulnerable population through each phase of the implementation of Origanum Syriacum value chain using the Farmer Field School approach for Lebanese farmers and Syrian workers. This intervention aims to foster the Traditional Lebanese Zaatar production in the targeted areas and increase access to income generating activities in a protective environment that supports economic and psychosocial well-being of targeted beneficiaries.

Along with the technical support for farmers, all participants will benefit from in-kind support which initially includes Drip irrigation systems contributing to a better quality of production in addition to using water more efficiently and reduce water waste in agriculture.   

 

  1. Scope of work

 

Under this action, Concern worldwide will conduct an outreach of 200 farmers living specifically in Akkar and Dannieh, in locations where climate conditions are favourable for Zaatar production. Each farmer should have a minimum of 1 dunam area of marginalized land suitable to grow Origanum Syriacum, the variety used for the production of Local Lebanese Zaatar. Around 2500 seedlings will be distributed for each farmer and planted on the selected lands. Therefore, a drip irrigation system should be installed on each land allowing water to drip on the roots of each of the planted seedling.

This call is specifically for experts with previous experience in designing drip irrigation systems for crop production, developing installation plans and drawings in addition to a clear understanding of drip irrigation accessories and fittings.

Therefore, the consultant will be directly responsible on delivering the following:

  • Conduct field visits to 200 selected lands distributed among Akkar and Dannieh.
  • Provide a detailed drip irrigation design and installation plan for all the lands (one plan for each or a common plan for several lands if applicable) in consultation with the beneficiaries.
  • Detailed list drip irrigation fittings and accessories for each land with detailed specifications in concern templates
  • Coordinate regularly with Concern Agriculture Specialist for the provision of technical inputs and/or agriculture officers to plan for the visits and access the selected land for each farmer in the targeted areas of intervention.

The consultant will report to Concern Livelihood Project Manager and will liaise closely with livelihood Agriculture Specialist and Livelihood Agriculture Officer.

 

 

  1. Timeframe

This consultancy is to be finalized within one month with all deliverables completed after signing the contract. The designs and the procurement list should be submitted and validated by concern by end of January 2021.

 

  1. Required Expertise
  • An irrigation/agricultural engineer or an agricultural firm having at least three years of experience in the design and installation of drip irrigation systems.
  • Deep understanding about all drip irrigation system fittings and accessories.
  • Proficient in using design software i.e. AutoCad.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office especially Excel.  
  • Experience in dealing with vulnerable communities
  • Humanitarian motivation and commitment to Concern Values.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Proof of work on implementing previous work of similar projects.
  • CV’s of applicant.
  • Preliminary general budget including consultancy fees for all the deliverables mentioned above.

Please note that Concern will cover all the transportation fees of the consultants for the trips from Concern office in Halba to the selected lands.
