Understanding the social question in the Middle East and North Africa - Session 1 - IMF and (bread) riots: Perspectives from Tunisia.

The Centre for Social Sciences Research and Action is pleased to announce the launching of the first session of its webinar series:

Understanding the social question in the Middle East and North Africa

Session 1 - IMF and (bread) riots: Perspectives from Tunisia.

With speaker:

Dr. Leyla Dakhli (French CNRS, March Bloch Center, Berlin)

The session will be introduced by:

Dr. Michele Scala (Centre for Social Sciences Research and Action)

The session will be moderated by:

Ms. Nada Trigui (Tunisian Observatory of Economy)

The first session of this webinar cycle will present and discuss the research of Dr. Leyla Dakhli on the “Bread Riots” that broke out in Tunisia on 28 December 1983, in the wake of World Bank-sponsored programmes. This movement lasted barely ten days, yet cost the lives of over one hundred people. The research explains how the inhabitants in popular neighborhoods reacted to the establishment of a new form of welfare state that was more concerned with fighting poverty – or fighting the poor – than with equalizing conditions or offering the same opportunities for everyone. Dr Dakhli will discuss how these protests marked a break with past practices of state reform and popular protest, and suggest that International Monetary Fund and World Bank prescriptions reconfigured the political and social landscapes of independent Tunisia.

The webinar is part of the thematic cycle “Understanding the social question in the Middle East and North Africa”, by The Centre for Social Sciences Research and Action. By undertaking a historical and political survey of the progressive reconfigurations of the social question in the region, this webinar series wishes to contribute to better understand the construction of social justice demands in contemporary Middle East and North Africa.
