Working Hours: 40 hours per week

 

About ARM

Anti-Racism Movement (ARM) is a non-governmental organization working to dismantle systemic racism and achieve social, economic, and gender justice for migrant workers and racialized groups in Lebanon since 2011. Migrant Community Center (MCC) is a safer space for migrants living under Kafala. MCC works with migrant domestic workers to improve their living and working conditions and build their capacities to self-advocate for their rights as agents and leaders of change. Its programs include community-building, capacity-building, psychosocial wellbeing, community-led initiatives, and advocacy.

Job Purpose

To support the work of ARM’s Advocacy and Communications Team, and expand the team’s capacity to respond to current events through documenting trends and producing relevant research and reports.

Areas of Contribution & Related Accountabilities

 

Research and Documentation:

  • Monitor, document and analyze government policies and other political developments related to migrants and refugees,
  • Compile and share news digests with staff on a regular basis, in order to keep the team informed of all developments relevant to our work
  • Contribute to the development ARM’s policy options and positions,
  • In coordination with the Advocacy Officer, contribute to drafting statements articulating specific parts of ARM’s positions, or reactions to current events in Lebanon (e.g. press release, protest manifesto), and spread to its intended audience
  • With the Advocacy Officer, develop content for statements, letters, research reports, guides, and other written materials for advocacy purposes;.
  • Contribute to the development of organizational publications for internal or external audiences (e.g. coordinating Annual Report, editing studies, etc.)
  • Support the Knowledge Coordinator in conducting technical research on specific topics and issues relevant to their work;
  • Contribute to the development of  a year-long advocacy plan to promote ARM’s positions;
  • Archive existing relevant publications, identify information gaps and select strategic research topics to be explored with staff/consultants/students;

 

Advocacy and Communications Support:

  • Lead on the content creation for ARM’s Racism Monitor by identifying racist narratives, practices and policies, and collaborate with the team  to create counter-narratives;
  • Connect with local and international editors, journalists and broadcasters to disseminate relevant information about the situation of Migrant Workers in Lebanon, and ARM’s political position on current events,practices and policies;
  • Act as one of the several spokespeople for ARM and MCC in media interviews, public talks and discussions, panels, forums, etc.;
  • Support the Advocacy team in organizing internal and external policy discussions relevant to Migrant Domestic Workers,
  • Support the Advocacy team in planning, organizing, and documenting meetings with Migrant Communities for Advocacy purposes,
  • In coordination with the team, draft, translate, and/or publish content for campaigning & advocacy, and other materials for external and internal use, such as fact sheets, talking points, testimonies, press releases, etc. 
  • Represent ARM and MCC to the media and at specific meetings and events when required

 

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Attend weekly team meetings and actively contribute to decision making when needed;
  • Attend General Staff Meetings and contribute to the development of the Advocacy and Communications Team’s presentation at those meetings;
  • Properly document all advocacy outputs in a transparent and accessible manner for all ARM staff to be able to consult any information they require;
  • Regularly communicate team decisions and rationale to ARM staff, and answer their questions.

 

 

Communications & Work Relationships

 

Internal Communication

 

  • Regular contact with all Advocacy & Communications team members
  • Regular contact with Casework Manager and staff
  • Regular contact with MCC Manager and staff
  • Regular contact with domestic workers and migrant activists
  • Occasional contact with the Executive Director & core management team

 

External Communication

 

  • Regular contact with media representatives
  • Occasional contact with research partners, activists, ARM supporters, NGOs, and other stakeholders as needed
  • Occasional contact with school/university representatives
  • Occasional contact with researchers and designers contracted by ARM.

 

 

Framework, Boundaries, and Decision Making Authority

The jobholder suggests possible solutions to the Advocacy and Communications Manager for final decision-making, and takes necessary actions.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • University Degree in Public Policy, Political Sciences,  Media and Journalism, or a related field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of migration issues and the situation of migrant workers in Lebanon.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NGOs, nonprofit organizations and human rights issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local politics and policies.
  • Good command of online and social media tools.
  • Good Microsoft Office Skills.
  • Experience required:  2-4 years.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English & Arabic.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strategic thinking, teamwork.
  • Very good organizational and time management skills, proactive, self-motivated.
