Assignment description: Prepare and deliver one full-day training workshop for 17 journalists on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism.

Assignment Location: Beirut, Lebanon.

Employment Type: Short-term assignment.

Assignment Period: April – June 2025

Level of Effort: Two expert days.

DRI is recruiting an AI Expert to train 17 young journalists on the effective use of AI tools in journalism. The expert will design and deliver a one-day interactive training workshop covering key AI applications. This training aims to enhance journalistic integrity, combat misinformation, and support independent reporting through practical, hands-on learning.

Background

Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting political participation and democratic governance worldwide. Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, DRI operates across Western Asia and North Africa (WANA), Sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe. It maintains country offices in Tunisia, Lebanon, Libya (operating remotely from Tunisia), the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ukraine, collaborating with various international and local partners across several countries. In addition to its physical presence, DRI is actively engaged in promoting Digital Democracy in many other areas.  

Since 2016, DRI Lebanese country office has been raising awareness and advocating for evidence-based policies and public debates that foster democratic and accountable governance, the rule of law, and political participation in Lebanon, in cooperation with civil society organisations and public officials. Particularly, DRI is working to expand the democratic space for a civil society-led debate on systemic change in Lebanon, encouraging citizens to actively participate in the governing of their own country in an inclusive and participatory manner.

In the framework of its project entitled: “Voices from the Field: Supporting Independent Reporting in Lebanon”, DRI is acting as an enabler of collaboration between young journalists and independent media outlets. The project aims at strengthening journalistic integrity and impartial reporting, combating the spread of fake news on mainstream and digital platforms and fostering a community of independent journalists dedicated to high-quality reporting on topics related to liberties, democratic rights, internal displacement, and political concerns during and post-crisis. 

In this context, DRI is currently recruiting an AI Expert to deliver one on-site full-day training workshop for up to 17 journalists on the use of various AI tools in their daily tasks and content delivery mainly regarding research, data analysis, fact-checking, content generation, etc.

Your duties and responsibilities

Under the supervision of DRI’s Programme Unit, the Expert shall deliver one full-day hands-on training workshop on AI tools in journalism, covering the following topics:

• Design and submit a tailored training module with hands-on exercises and practical tools and a pre-and post-test to be shared prior to the training (½ expert day).
• Deliver one full-day interactive workshop demonstrating AI tools in journalism (1 expert day).
• Instruct on practical skills, ethical considerations, and best practices for integrating AI into journalism.
• Encourage active participation through discussions, Q&A sessions, and collaborative exercises.
• Provide follow-up resources, mentorship, and ongoing support for participants.
• Once the training is completed, submit a training report summarising the training outcomes and the pre- and post-training tests results, reflecting the trainees’ increase in knowledge as per the template provided by DRI (½ expert day).  

Your skills and experience

• A degree in Computer Science, Journalism, Media Studies, or other relevant fields.
• A certification in AI or relevant digital tools.
• At least 3 years of experience in designing and delivering training workshops.
• Extensive knowledge of various AI agents, tools, and their practical applications in journalism.
• Delivering previous trainings for journalists or independent media outlets on AI tools is an asset.
• Strong understanding of the Lebanese context and media landscape.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
